In a couple of months it is my son's school prom & I'd like to take a few photos of him & his mates all dressed up in their suits - nice changed from jeans & t-shirts for them lot!! However, I don't want to do the whole "stand in a line & smile for the camera" thing, as I think the official photographer will do enough of them. I wondered if anyone had any suggestions of a good way to capture them? Any ideas are very welcome :)

I did this a couple of years ago for a friend. Get them down the park or use the local beauty spot and ask them to pose on walls, swings, seesaws, against trees, playing soccer etc...

Excellent idea - hopefully be able to get some "relaxed" shots that way, rather than the usual posed for ones. Thanks :)

I was going to say take them out of contex for what they are wearing, usually his mates will all be on the same team at school or somthing so get them to do a "team photo" with ball, goal posts or other sports kit, if its cricket get them in their pads and their bags lay on the floor in front. Just makes it different but perfectly normal for what they would normally be doing. Them on swings etc takes them back to their childhood a little as well as they will look all grown up for the first time normally.

Liking the idea of props - it might help them to relax while I take photos. Thanks :)

Also a big black umbrella, instant background and something else that can be a prop

Ohhhh like it! :D Between you, you'll have me taking professional looking photos!
