I came across an old bosuns whistle in an old drawer when i was having a clear out the other day , it had something to do with my grandad who was in the merchant navy during the war, its engraved with the name margorie tickle srs freya on one side of the keel and the other says 64 pinehurst avenue liverpool 4. My grandad was born and brought up 10 minute walk away from pinehurst..but tickle is not a family name ive looked about and according to wikapedia SRS Freya was a german steam ship ..the crown engraved on the whistle is a kings crown so probably from edward 7th that would link in with freya being built in 1874 and dismantled in 1897 gaving spent its life in the mediteranian, china and around chilian waters before becoming a training ship...but im curious as why an english woman on a german ship had a bosuns whistle in edwardian times

The German ship was SMS Freya. Could the R in SRS stand for something else? Could she have been part of a training ship or a cadet squadron?
