Newts threaten Boris Johnson’s plan to build swimming pool

Creature railed against by ex-prime minister could thwart planning application for Oxfordshire home

Boris Johnson may finally be out of political hot water, but plans to erect an outdoor swimming pool at his Oxfordshire home have been disrupted by a population of great crested newts.
Since leaving frontline politics, the former prime minister has been keen to press ahead with improvements to the home he purchased in May and has been living in with his wife, Carrie, and their three children.

However, it seems that the great crested newt, against which Johnson railed when he was in No 10 and accused of being “a massive drag on the prosperity of this country”, has had its revenge.
The UK’s largest newt, which takes its name from the striking jagged crest that males display in the spring breeding season, is a protected species under British law.
As such, an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison could await anyone found guilty of disturbing the newt’s resting places and breeding sites, or taking their eggs.
Johnson launched an application with South Oxfordshire district council in June for the construction of an outdoor pool, measuring 11 metres by 4 metres (36ft x 13ft).
But Edward Church, a local government ecologist who reviewed the application, did not recommend granting permission for the pool to be built because there are great crested newts living in the grounds

Sweet irony! I wonder who he conned into letting him have this house - surely he can't have bought it with his own money? A 11m by 4m pool, doesn't want much does he. He obviously expects global warming to have an impact worthy of such a pool outside his back door.

wow whats wrong with people let the t*** have a pool

Anyone remember the scene in "Shallow Hal" when Gwyneth Paltrow jumps into the pool?

I'd love to see Boris do better :D

Sadly I don't know that one Alan, but it made me think of Vicar of Dibley when Dawn French jumps in the puddle...(of muddy water) - seems appropriate somehow

Gwyneth is wearing a "fat suit" to play a very large lady... She dive bombs into a pool and creates a huge splash sending a small boy into a nearby tree.

It's a romantic comedy and well worth a watch :D It's one of my favourite pictures :D It's all about seeing a persons inner beauty.

Sounds good, I'll check it out. Very appropriate too.

Possibly people are concerned about
  1. The cost of heating such a large volume of water when many people won't be able to heat their homes this winter largely due to his policies
  2. The environmental impact of filling a big hole in his vast garden with thousands of gallons (at 2 m deep it would be c20k gallons) while much of the country has hosepipe bans at least partly because his government was so lax in controlling the water industry
  3. The suspicion that he tried to get legislation through to make it "easier" for plucky homeowners such as himself to eradicate a critically endangered species just so he could build a pool for himself and a handful of his children
  4. The lingering suspicion that most if not all of his money actually comes from either backhanders or defrauding the taxpayers - he's had a lot of "investments" in his new ventures by grateful businessmen and there are still questions over literally billions of pounds missing whilst he was distracting us with cheese and wine
  5. A "celebrity" tries it on and has unfortunate luck in an ironic incident which doesn't affect anybody else so is merely funny for people who don't like him (of which there are many)
Honestly, it's take your pick.

Many a building project ha been scuppered by the discovery of an endangered species.
Why should he be any different?

There was a piece on tv recently about the targeting of individuals possibly putting people off going into politics and I can see that plus of course there's plenty of millionaires on the opposition benches and it'll be interesting to see if they attract any comparable level of criticism when they get their chance in government. They arguably don't seem to be attracting it in opposition.

Like the man or not I really can't begrudge him a pool as very few in his position would give it all away and live in a terraced house in northern England. I suspect that the vast majority of his critics in the general population would be impacting the environment in comparable or maybe even worse ways if they had the money and some of his critics in politics and the higher echelons of society with the money probably are. Googling tells me Tony B has property worth £27M and net worth of £50M, I believe he flies a lot too.

I'm sure he will find someone to say its ok and that he will be following the rules.

Yes unfortunately that’s what often happens, there was an area with a pond with the newts in our village that the developers had their eye on to build on
they got their planning permission by agreeing to mitigation
in practice this was digging a hole in the local park putting in a liner and catching some newts and putting them in
the pond lasted little more than a year and another habitat for wildlife lost forever

i find it hard to care about a few newts in this country when we have so many people living in poverty and homeless etc, need to get a grip

The law is the law, any others you would like to disregard?
Wildlife crime £5000 .fine and or 6 months inside.

What’s wrong with caring about both it doesn’t have to be one or the other , if we had a decent government of any party that actually cared out our country then we wouldn’t have the issue with poverty and homelessness and environmental destruction that’s happening now both are wrong, it’s the narrative that the right use to divide us

Sorry if that was political as this isn’t hot topics but felt it had to be said

Tempting if you're looking for cheap winter accommodation.

Reminds me of an episode of "Porridge" in which Barraclough says he sometimes wishes he was inside with the inmates rather than at home with his wife.

I think "the right" has ceased to exist to any meaningful extent and most of the division now arguably comes from "the left." If we look at the most divisive issues of the day, racism, gender, reassignment medication and surgery and other issues most of it seems to be coming from people and organisations that would explode if you suggested they were of "the right." The "the left" isn't what it was even just a few years ago either so I doubt traditional labels of "left" and "right" mean all that much any more or at least not whilst any mainstream and even "left" view of a few years ago can today apparently be "far right." Where can we find a Margaret Thatcher today let alone an Oswald Mosely? Even the likes of Tony Benn or Roy Hatherley (who I once admired, and that's Roy not Tony) would probably struggle to recognise "the left" and the hills they choose to die on these days.

On homelessness, you can't eradicate it completely without physically detaining people who don't want to stay put or who would be evicted by any private or state landlord and there would be people who would have to be kept in custodial like conditions. With guards. I think there'll always be a number of homeless people no matter what measures are put in place short of draconian measures which would be seen as unacceptable. Poverty is difficult because "relative poverty" and "social exclusion" get dragged into it and bring their own definitions and we can end up with bizarre definitions which can IMHO be utterly meaningless. Being married to an immigrant and having immigrant partners in the past it is often interesting for me to see their reaction of astonishment and disbelief when looking at these debates in the UK. Not that the conditions overseas should be replicated here, but maybe we need to look at things with a little less reactionary zeal and a little more realism and even common sense.

Pretty sure that Michael Barrymore is still alive but it had occurred to me how similar someone could look to Brian Jones in his last moments, albeit a rather fatter version!

Feel free to kill one of our native species, let me know when you are done,
as I still have contacts at DEFRA, I'll give them the heads up (y)

Can't say I'm surprised by the facepalm and comment at what should be blindingly obvious was a joke :ty: for the reminder that there'll always be someone to massively over react (y)

Written jokes are always a problem. Some of the best writers have found that out the hard way! :naughty:

Sarcasm? yes I expected nothing else from you.
As yet I haven't massively overreacted, that would have been a thread ban...
Still under consideration is that one.

As for you, adding :naughty: to all your posts doesn't let you off the hook ...
Sorry.

Sometimes it's hard to know what's in play and what isn't.

I'm very rarely sarcastic, It's not something I do whilst you are very often.... You and you often live up to my expectations,

Yes, you have the ability to ban and I have the ability to walk away from this as the enjoyment is waning and often and rapidly so.
