Good evening all,

I know there was a fairly recent thread on this, where the Manfrotto boom arm/stand (I forget the model sorry) was highly recommended, but at around £130 I think that's a little expensive for my needs.

I'm after a simple boom arm I can attach onto a fairly substantial light stand I already own. I require it to be able to hold a Smartflash with 70cm beauty dish directly over/in-front of a subjects head without killing them shorty after :bonk:

Wall mounts are unfortunately out of the question because I don't have the luxury of being able to drill holes in the wall :(

There is no budget really, just something nice quality and reliable for home studio use, for as little as possible. If nothing turns up I'll probably end up getting the Manfrotto, but I though I would see what you peeps recommend if anything :)

Any advice would be great :)

Cheers,

Rob

elemental lighting do one that can be used with their studio heads, so it should be perfectly good enough, for £65 :)

I used a couple of these

worked a treat

oops you said not wall booms :bang:

The 70cm beauty dish is a heavy beast, personally I would be very wary of fitting it to any of the cheaper boom arms.

As pointed out in the other thread, it's essential to balance it perfectly (and make sure that the counterweight can't slip or fall off, which some of them are prone to do) and to put a LOT of weight on the bottom of the lighting stand.

One of the really difficult things (as you'll find out) is to add or remove a heavy item safely with the boom arm on the stand. You end up wishing that your arms were 6' long and that you have 3 or them:) so really you need an assistant to hold one end while you add or remove weight from the other.

Thanks very much for all your input guys, I am wary about sticking that amount of moneys worth of equipment on the end of a pole, but I think done correctly it should be ok (fingers crossed)

Maybe I should play it safe and splash out a little.

My advise, get the Manfrotto one...

I have a chinese version which I got cheap! but to be honest it is a pain to use.... very heavy, really difficult to position the beauty dish etc. so am now thinking of just getting the real thing!
