No
My pal has asked me to do some videos for him. He supplies motor bike parts and wand to make some, how to, videos. He has suggested that whatever we use an external mic is important and preferable on a boom.

So can any one recommend a mic and boom please at a price that is not silly :)

rode are a good reasonably price brand if that helps

What are you recording with ? a DSLR (forget it i tried and it picks up every focus click) or camcorder with a voice over?.
I just love my Panasonic HCX900M camcorder with a Sennheiser MK400e mic . No need for a boom either as it is a directional mic and can pick up sound from a great distance

This is with that setup

To move about one of these a steadycam

Maybe even one of these for lighting to highlight awkward places when looking around bike parts

Grip seperate purchase but easier to hold. The the camera flash is useless when doing video, you need powerful continuous light which the CN-160 gives for the purpose to want to use it in. An assistant can hold it for you

Using a Canon 6D, as its states in the title ;)

The camera will probably be fixed to a tripod so not moving about. The shoot will be done in a garage which is about 20x20 meters

Had a read up up Rode mics and from what I can see I need a mono mike. Rode do the pro and the cheaper go but from watching comparisons the pro does sound the better mike. However not look at other makes yet.

As for lighting he has serveral high output LED worklights whick we could use?

Edit: Looked at the Takstar SGC-598. The was an interesting comparison between it and the Rode -

You know the situation you are working in so any help/advice can only be done by presumption. What if I may suggest is view similar on youtube to get ideas on how you want this to work.

You may want to look at an audio recorder as well. I don't know the 6D, but as a general rule, DSLRs are very limited when it comes to audio. A simple external recorder with built in mic will probably be a decent bet for something like this - see Tascam, Zoom, etc. as the usual suspects. Most models above the base will give you options to add further external microphones to the recorder later on if you like as well.

If you want it on a boom, I'd just grab whatever's going cheap on Ebay or your favourite auction site. You're inside, static and with hardly any weight on the end of it, so it shouldn't really matter.

If you are just static, then you can either put the mic on a mic stand out of shot (no need for a boom) or you can put a lapel clip mic on his collar. This will give a much nicer sound without getting lots of noise from a large echoey garage.

The only reason to use a mic on a boom is if you can't have a mic visible on the person.

As pointed out by Jayst84, you will probably be better off using an external audio recorder because DSLRs are not the best at audio recording.
Try something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tascam-DR-0..._UL160_SR160,160_&refRID=1GQCMT75Q2S1BVAHADBH
or http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoom-H1-Han...453674979&sr=1-1&keywords=zoom+audio+recorder
Both of these have stereo mics in them that are very good quality and you can just record straight onto them and it'll give you better quality than recording the audio on your DSLR.
Watch this to hear the difference between recording into a DSLR (a Nikon D750) and the Zoom H1.

Here's a couple of comparisons of different mics like the Rode VideoMic.

Don't skimp on sound, if you have nice pictures but rubbish sound, people will notice.
