Bloody stupid question about tripods

Am I right in thinking that the fixing between tripod head and legs are an industry standard? I'm now thinking of Gitzo legs and Manfrotto head and don't want to risk the twain ne'er meeting.

Additionally, I think someone mentioned a remote release from an independent manufacturer which works with just about any camera. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks!

I've seen two sizes of "standard" fitting between the tripod and head...1/4" and 3/8". Most tripods have a 3/8" stud and most heads accept this.

I have two of the remote shutter releases...they've worked on my EOS 300, 350 and 400. if you're talking Canon. You're welcome to one for a fiver.

To add to what Bob said, if ever you want to make your own mount with a standard screw fitting, the standard camera thread is 1/4" UNC (or BSW [Whitworth] - near enough the same) and the head thread on most tripods is 3/8" UNC. You can buy the bolts at most hardware stores and concoct something. :)
