Know someone who professes to be a wildlife enthisiast, got a text from them on Monday saying they had been to see a barn owl nest but couldn't get near because it was high up and a rickety ladder was the only access, did I fancy trying.
Umm no they are shedule 1 birds and you shouldn't be anywhere near the nest, reply "Rules are made to be broken and I know what I'm doing"
WTF don't think my reply to that was very well accepted.
Would any of you in all honesty risk upsetting a nest for the sake of a photo, I certainly wouldn't, I have blackbirds and sparrows nesting in my hedges and I don't go anywhere near them, protected or not, it's just not right :(
I don't risk any animals welfare, yes I have a picture of a newborn fallow deer faun, I was watching the herd and mum chose to give birth not far from where I was, she was totally aware of my prescence and it didn't upset her, watched those first magical moments of the faun trying to walk
then moved on and left them in peace

Agreed completely. The welfare of the animal comes first.

There are, unfortunately, too many people, and not just when dealing with wildlife, who appear to be of the view that what they want is more important than anything else.

Dave

Totally agree,at worst he could have positioned himself far from the nest where he could view the bird in flight going to and fro whilst not actually harrasing or causing it any distress

For once I actually agree with the cry to report him, the guys an A hole and a dangerous one for the local barn owls by the sounds of it.

The estate owner up here gave me permission to site a barn owl box in an old barn up here, I did that and six months or so later, I watch two barn owls fly in and out of there, I sit and listen to the noises from within of young barn owls from the hide I built some 50 meters away. Sometimes I just sit in the car at the edge of the field, watching and listening.

I opened that barn up, I sited that box and I was ecstatic when they began using it. As much as I would love to see the young, never has it crossed my mind to unlock that barn and disturb them.

Report the grade A pillock.

Much as I would love to I don't know where the nest site is and doubt I will find out now, he didn't get the pictures so there wouldn't be any prrof, my word against his, and prat thast I am I have a habit of immediately deleting messages when I reply to them :bang:

Sad very sad i think your question has been answered reporting him is the only thing you can do

All the best,Ian

Me personaly i would report him,i am currently watching a GSW feeding chicks's , i am well covered up and i know roughly how long they are out before coming back to feed, they are in and out with me their regular but as soon as i sense they are late coming back i move on and leave just to be on the safe side,...i realy canot do with these people who go for the trophy shot with no concern or welfare of the animal.

That is particularly concerning, as the individual obviously has no regard for the welfare of animals or the law and is likely to take that line with any wildlife.

I'm not a big fan of the laws in their present form, but I would take action if I thought someone was intent on getting that close to the nest of a schedule 1 species with an attitude like that.

If it's local, I'm sure Sam - or possibly Jake would be aware of where Barn Owls are nesting. Failing that, the chap at the BTO (Russell is it?) might be worth a try. Most Barnies nest in man-made boxes now, so if these aren't I doubt it'd be hard to figure out the location - especially if they are known to the RSPB, SWT or BTO.

It may be your word against his, but if anything did happen to the brood they will at least have somewhere to start.

Not local to them Chris, it would be somewhere in Surrey, will have to try and find out where and tip off the authorities to keep a watch
Might see if I can catch up with Sam too over the weekend if he's about
