blogging

How many people on here blog? I've started my own, kind of addictive haha.

Of those who do blog, is tumblr or WordPress better?

Here is my blog http://mattd85.tumblr.com/post/92578096150/you-dont-need-expensive-camera-equipment-to-take

I would class tumblr more as "social media" in that I don't think you can have it hosted where you want - a bit like google's "blogger" platform.

Wordpress (wordpress.org NOT wordpress.com!) is probably the most popular blog platform with very good reason, and there are other alternatives like drupal but this is not so user friendly for beginners.

I have no idea what a blog is let alone how to go about doing one.

Not heard of Koken before but it looks quite good - I wonder how it compares with wordpress in terms of ease of changing & customising themes.

It is very easy to change themes ... select a theme in the Koken store (they have free themes) and then hit use. It's as simple as that. The number of themes and plugins is quite limited, but it does works well. You can also customise the themes through the admin page, and you can use your own styling with an existing theme. They also have tutorials on building themes, but I haven't got around to looking at that yet.

I've had a blog for 6 years or so as a complement to my main website. I've been using wordpress.com for 5 years (the first year was hosted on blogger, which sucked) and it's been pretty straightforward. I have no interest in faffing round with hosting and all the technical nonsense that requires, so having a wordpress hosted blog suits me fine, plus it's free. There seems to be more free themes than when I first started, and I recently changed to a more contemporary one than my older one, which was nice.

I've also recently started a tumblr site, but that's a different animal completely. I've not really fully explored what you can do with tumblr, but it does seem more limited in what you can do from what I can make out. I could be totally wrong though.

I was thinking of trying weebly.com seems very easy and loads of themes.

I've been using Blogger since 2006 for various things. It's surprisingly flexible when you lift the bonnet and poke about - and much more so than when I started using it.

I was looking at starting one if I get zenfolio as it has a blogging option. But to be honest I'm cr@p at writing stuff down and saying how I feel... it would just turn into a jumbled mess of nonsense.

Also not sure I could keep up with the demands of blogging as I understand to do it properly you need to post at least once a week.

If you are doing it to make money or help you make money, then yes, a blog works best if regularly updated. If you do it for fun, then it doesn't matter.

the nice thing about a photo centric blog is that you can let the pictures do most of the "talking" after all a photo says 1000 words lol
