Just had the engineer round to convert me from the bronze age (** wires) to the light age (fibre optic) with the consequent speed gain. Literally just back online so no real idea as to the speed I'm now getting but I-Player now doesn't buffer and the test Google image search I did comes up faster than I can scroll using a touch screen!

Just run a quick test...

which is just a bit quicker than it was first thing!

Welcome to the 21st Century. (62/16 here :)). Good ping time too....

20/8 is way faster than I need or am likely to in the foreseeable future! The most taxing thing I do on the web is Player! No movie or music downloads or gaming!

I'm in a newly connected part of somerset, I have many friends in london who are jealous.

70/21 peaks at the early hours of the morning
35/10 during daytime :)

Are you on BT Infinity or Talk Talk

I am up near Midsomer Norton and just over 2 miles from the exchange but only 100 metres from the green cabinet.

Got Infinity in March 2012 on a 34/8 speed and 1 month later BT upgraded me to Infinity 2 free of charge and now on a consistent 73/16.. Massive change from Talk Talk 3.4/0.8

You may find your speed will increase as the exchange balances your line.

At this time I am not sure whether the uptake for FTTC [Fibre to the Cabinet] is that big around here but I don't seem to get any dips in speed.

BT have just offered Infinity 3 with more speed but I am content. The YourView box BT sent works flawlessly and keeps "She who must drop cameras" very happy!

I am not over impressed with the wiress transmission from the BT Home Hub 3 so thinking about a change (Asus?)

Good luck and you will be well set for all the new household internet enabled goodies. eg Fridges that will know what you are running out of and send a shopping list to your smartphone along with you scanning codes on tins dry goods..... ahhh convergence technology!!!

I'm on EE but they use BT's lines. The Modem is supplied by BT but the router's one that EE gave me. The engineer was from a Reading based subcontractor.

We're a little way from the cabinet and even further from the exchange. The supplied wireless router works at every point on the property (which isn't huge!) from where it's currently situated (beside the front door) and the engineer was kind enough to make me a lead that's long enough to site it upstairs for extra range should I want/need it.

This is why you need higher bandwidths. And why Sky are pushing so hard to become a dominant ISP...

I think the "Grade F" and "Slower than 86% of the GB" is a pretty good giveaway ;)

im not that far from town exchange (2 miles) but no fibre here, so the tinternet can be quite frustrating.

I have many friends who moved to the newly installed BT infinity near to where I live, it was insanely fast for about 3 months, but now it's no faster (in tests) than my ADSL2, sure it syncs faster, but the actuall speed is still around 6Mb/s.

I didn't swap over, because a) I suspect half the town have jumped on the same bandwagon and b) the current BT router would stop/block my FTP and HTTP server from working.
In fact I swear my connection is getting faster and faster as more people switch to fibre.

Besides if im syncing at 18Mb/s, but only actually getting 6Mb/s, then logically the blockage isn't my connection, it's BT's bandwidth shaping AND what's the point in super fast BB if every service that uses it, is bandwidth limited by your ISP?

Filesharing = zero bandwidth from 11am till 11:00pm, 60Kb/s from 11:00pm til 11:30pm.

Just installed a computer for a friend, very slow to open pages.

Speed test gave 0.4Mb/s, the old dial-up days are alive and well!

I am very jealous. Here in Spain we are hoping to upgrade to copper wire from wool soon.

Which is why I'm on fibre, but not with BT ;)

Ahh.. shaddup... :p You have a yellow thing in the sky most days - that we over here only see very occasionally ;)

Well, I could go wish VM, but they ****ed me off years ago, when my exGFs internet went down for a day and the support folk wouldn't accept that it was a problem on their end.

I had 2 PC's and a latop ALL experiencing no internet, the support person was trying to get me to use a Cat-5 instead of WiFi, DESPITE me having perfectly good access to the router setup page (thus the WiFi must be working), then told me I needed to reinstall Windows ON ALL 3 MACHINES..... It was an epic arguement, 12 years experience versus a clueless computer science graduate reading from a standard fault finding flow chart/list.

2 hours later they called me back and then admitted there was a fault in the area and would take 48hrs to fix.... At which point I again launched a full on verbal assault, explaining that telling people to reinstall their OS's is a really dumb way to "pass the buck", because "you only do it so that the customer spends 4hrs getting their PC working again, calls back when your shift has ended and the problem has probably already been fixed by your technicians" (which then leads to less knowledgable people advising eachother/friends/family to wipe their machines at the first sign of a problem).

So yeah, I'm with BT because when there's a problem, they don't call me a liar and waste my time

No, they're even worse!! I'm with Claranetsoho. Backhaul to their PoP is provided by OpenReach, but I don't seem to get any contention there. Although I pay business prices, I'm pretty happy with my service level (nothing blocked, nothing managed, no limits)...

Openreach are pretty good about ensuring that they aren't the point of contention and will provision more capacity at an exchange or in their IP network if required to ensure this. They also don't traffic shape, that's down to the ISP.

Contention is more usually due to cheapskate ISPs not provisioning a big enough link from the BT IP networks, or sufficient capacity in their external links (a decade or so back AOL were notorious for this)

No, I guess there would be all sorts of murmurings if the ISPs business was throttled by the service they pay OR for...

Yup - agree 100% You can't expect to pay a paltry sum for fibre and then expect to not have it oversold....

I'll have to run the test when we're in Crete. I think they've got BB but since one of the places we use Wi-Fi is a hotel with plenty of guests sharing the line and the other's a beach bar with plenty of people boozing or on the beach browsing, I can't see either being that swift!

I must be lucky as I do not get contention issues and was told by BT that I will not suffer "traffic shaping".

I am on the unlimited package and again the blurb on the BT site re their YourView offer (Humax box - free + £49 + £5 monthly), reconfirms that on Infinity there will be no buffering or bandwidth limits.

The Sky acquisition of O2 home broadband business makes them a big player and I am sure they will want to use the Openreach fibre connection. Around where I live there are very unhappy Sky broadband customers who are still in the doldrums on speed of their connections, especially with their SMART televisions.

The future will require a lot more capacity. That means fibre at each end. Virgin have done this from day 1 but would not connect our rural area as not enough population

On mySo next step for BT after FttC is FttP (Fibre to the Property/Premises) which means potential revenue boost as they widen their reach and services. They have bought into the rights to the EPL to deliver live footie through the YourView box.

BT were looking at 120-300M connections with FttP as a next step.

Experience so far... I can download an MP3 album of around 80-120Mb from Amazon in 50-90 seconds at 8mb/s. On Talk Talk I struggled to see 175kb/s

Edit: The £49 listed above is an activation fee and contracg is 12 months minimum

Does it matter? :D

Not really! In my world, I was perfectly happy with my old speed TBH but since my wife and I are sometimes both online and watching TV via a Win8 app, the extra might come in handy. Of course, some servers at the far end are rather slow so some pages still take a few ms to load!

On holiday, I'll only be getting e-mails and looking in here - maybe a look at that TV app if it works over there! (I think there's an F1 GP so might peek at Pitpass and/or Autosport to see what's what.)

Hi Steve, I am in Radstick about 700yrds from the exchange. Been with TalkTalk for as long as I can remember. Never had any issues with them, although my result may not be as others there is no real point in me changing. I would not get optic anyhow as there is no green box between us and the exchange, also I think BT are a bunch of @$%%o$ :D

Wow rich your upload speed is way down comparatively.

Ahh.. shaddup... :p You have a yellow thing in the sky most days - that we over here only see very occasionally ;)

This is true. But I am jealous of a couple of things; internet speeds, Sky Digital (Canal+ is very poor by comparison).
Anyway, time to get some sun....

Strange that Midsomer Norton was chosen fairly early in the FttC roll out and included the small villages nearby too. IF you find a new green cabinet appear nearby or suddenly appearingit won't be "live" till you hear it humming.

Talk Talk have use of them too for their Fiber Boost.

I have my office in Bath and have business level connection thrre and it is half the speed I have at home!

This link shows your exchange services. It is cable enabled

I had a big falling out with BT some years back but my experience with TT was woeful.

It all depends on ehat your needs are. I use a lot od cloud services for my busoness soo need to move large video files and HiRes images around to build repotts for my clients. Apart ftom client visits I am working more and more at home. In 14 months my Infiniti service hasn't missed a beat.

Super fast broadband? :(

We were fairly recently upgraded from 10mbs to 20mbs but it seems you are still at the mercy of the server at the other end of the route you are using to access the data you want.

Having said that I did have a bit of a scoot around the planet while giving my 7 year old ain impromptu geography lesson and even from New Zealand of the Hawaiian islands I could still get a solid 3mbs.

Having got used to the speed above,
2747602476.png
is a bit slow! Doesn't help that something local is appearing where ads show up.

Bt have enabled my local exchange but will not upgrade my roadside cabinet, too expensive apparently :cuckoo: , so no fibre for me :'( . They seem to be happy spending millions on football coverage though :cuckoo: .

I'll stick to Ouzo! And I'll wait until 6pm.

Apparently there was a problem here yesterday too which slowed things down to a crawl - much faster today. Luckily, a friend popped in to see us yesterday evening so gave me a good excuse to be distracted before the netbook went swimming!
