I started a wrought iron business in 1984 and closed it down 15 years ago when l retired. Last night l got a phone call from a lady I made some gates for in 1988 to tell me that her gates had started to go rusty at the bottom and could I call round to see if l could do anything about it. After l told her I retired 15 years ago and l'm now well into my 70s she said 'oh I'm sorry, I never give it a thought that you would grow old like me'. She was lovely and we had a long chat about old times. She told me her husband had just died and she didn't know who to turn to anymore. Sad world.

I recently went to see the house I grew up in and moved out of aged 15, 51 years ago. I really wasn't sure about knocking on the door but I did.
I told the lady who answered who I was and that I'd been a child in her house. She said 'we bought it from your family, and you had that awful wallpaper' she said and proceeded to talk to me for almost 45 minutes. When we moved in I was allowed to choose the wallpaper, soldiers and tanks as I recall, and I totally agree with her, awful stuff.

She remembered my family, the sad stuff that had happened to us there (my sister died) and invited me in for a bowl of soup - I declined but she insisted that next time I visit that I should bring my kids and stay for a proper lunch. Her husband had died a few years ago (she is now 95) and she'd had few visitors since covid stopped all the village community stuff she was involved with - that was what made her sad.
But, what a wonderful experience, what a wonderful lady and what a wonderful feeling. There are some amazing people out there, we just have to go out and meet them.
I'll certainly go back.

The house we live in i bought from a pair of sisters, the Saville sisters back in about 1985 it was an ladies hair dressers.
About 5 years ago there was a knock on our kitchen door (the kitchen is the old shop it even has a modern shop front) see below
it was an old lady asking to come in for a cut and blow dry , the taxi driver with her saying to me i told her it closed about 25 years ago

me and my wife helped her back in to the taxi
