[s1]PRETTY PLEEZE ?[/s1]

I finished a lovely new wildlife pond in March just gone ... no fish just insects and natural plants ...

Probably carried in on some of the plants I purchased I now have increasingly serious trouble with BLANKET WEED ... it does exactly what it says on the tin ... blankets everything in sight and when cleared is covering the pond worse than ever in days ...

I have tried keeping it cleared ... no use ...

I have tried proprietary environmental bacteria like Green Lightning supposedly designed to 'eat' only Blanket Weed ... useless ... :suspect:

I just have a horrible green slimy mess all over my ex-beautiful wildlife pond now ... makes me just want to cry ...

Can anyone suggest some real BW destroyers or practical solutions tried and tested that really do work ...

in advance peeps ...

Ven ... :p

I tried the chemical approach & it killed my Ghost Koi :(.

I found the best method was using a bamboo cane to "stir / twizzle" the surface stuff & every couple of months lower the water level 3" , wait for the stuff stuck to the edges to die then scrub it off.

a piece of wood.... bamboo cane is fine... but i find a slightly rougher wood is best and just twirl it round and it comes out like candy floss.

Also, march is a very short time..... ponds take a year to stablilize.

is it in the sun?? we get a bit of sun morn and evening but mostly shade......blanket weed only round the edges on ours.

Hi Ven, a natural pond can take 2 years to mature and your plants need to cover at least 4/5 of the surface area, you will have crystal clear water and some fantastic insect subjects both aqua and ariel but you will have to be patient.

As other have said; Use a stick to twizzle it out(but leave it on the side for a while to let any creeply crawlies to crawl back into the water.) Also make sure you've got enough shade over the pond. Have you got any oxygenating plants in there? Finally do you top the pond up at all? We find that topping the pond up with tap water can make the blanket weed go wild. If you have a water but, or another source of rainwater then this will be much better. Good luck though, as its evil stuff. Although my fish don't seem to care too much.

I think patience is the keyword though. It will take ages to settle down...ours had blanketweek galore and cloudy water...fish dying all sorts.

Now we do nothing to it but feed the fish and clear a tiny bit of weed from round the edge occasionally and the water is as clear as a bell and fish have bred this year now.

Have patience...........this from the woman with NONE!! :D

As others have said it takes a while for a pond to mature. One trick is to use barley straw, put some in a net, leave it in the water and this will help to clear it of algae. The other option is a pump and filter system with a UV light built in, this helps to keep the water crystal clear.

HTH!

Thanx for all the hints 'n tips lovely people ...

... some things I had not been fully aware of like TIME & Patience ... like Janice these are not my strongest qualities ... :D

But I may need some more oxygenating stuff and surface cover is clearly an important factor ... lilies are just developing nicely and already flowering but not yet covering 1/3rd of the surface even.

I already have a surprising number of insects and 'creepy crawlies' including snails & freshwater leeches that I understand get imported to the pond on plants ... and a resident frog already ...

Pxl8 ... Thanx for the link with some very useful info ...

Now ... to just sit back and relax for up to two years ...
