Black tie and backgrounds

Not strictly studio I realise but it sort of is. Portable studio lol

I went to a black tie do a couple of weeks back and the photographer there used a black background for our posed pictures. Well when we saw them, us gents in our tuxes just tended to blend into the background. A lot of the ladies had black cocktail dresses on too.

It struck me as odd. Just wondered what backgrounds would be best for this type of event? Are black ones generally used?
 
Some people, notably Paul Rogers, use black backgrounds for event photography very successfully.

It's just a matter of understanding and using light correctly.

I went to an event that Paul photographed and bought quite a few shots from him. He's very good at rim lighting so the black suits stand out from the background.

Like Garry says, if you know what you're doing it works very well.

As an example, this is the drummer from the band that was at the event we were at on Saturday night.

Dark skin, black shirt and waistcoat.
