In the RAW file of the image below the dark background is very noisy. I want to provide the model with a reasonably "Hi Res" Tiff file so need to tidy up the background.

I can select the background easily enough, but I'm not sure what to do from there to improve it. Any ideas ?

Duplicate the layer
Switch to the bottom layer
Run some noise reduction tool in its strongest setting
Switch the top layer
Select the background
Delete/Hide selection

That will give you a noise free background without affecting the subject.

One flaw in that plan.....

Run some noise reduction tool in its strongest setting

I don't have anything like this - is there a freebie trial I can get - I need to get this completed tonight.....

Thanks for the input

Noiseware also do a free copy. Not a trail yours to keep. Although the paid for version has loads more tweeks in it the freebie should be fine for what you want

You may not even need to use a layer with Noiseware. try it and see

To improve that system a little, I would apply a layermask to the top layer instead. Then you simply paint the model area with black to remove the noise removal. This means that if you make a mistake, you can get switch to a white brush and paint the noise removal back. :)

I guess I should have been a little more verbose but I was in a hurry at the time. The last stage delete/hide selection is where the decision about using a mask or not is made. If you create a layer mask you have the option to hide or show the selection when the mask is created.

Also for this particular image you could try using a blur instead of noise removal as you want to remove noise from the plain background areas.

In my haste I assumed a certain level of understanding and shouldn't have, sorry.
