So correct me if I am wrong here but I thought Black Friday was supposed to be a one day only event?
Now it has been turned into a 168 hour day by the greed of retailers the same retailers that start selling Christmas in July if not before.
Don't get me wrong here I also like a bargain but don't you also get fed up with adverts continually telling you that Black Friday finishes in 7 days time?
If it's going to last a week then call it Black Week!!!
Oh!! I did get Adobe P/S & L/R at discount :banana:

The whole thing is a bit odd.

The first time I heard the term, I thought it referred to a day when retail business had come to a halt and the management were wringing their hands, while shedding tears, in empty shopping centres...

Like all the silly season sales, it's just another con (mostly). :rolleyes:

Don't get me wrong - there are definitely bargains to be had. I've had many myself, but you have to be very careful in selecting who you buy from.
 
Retail is one big con, shops exist to make a profit, not to sell you what you want to buy and the bigger the shop the bigger the con.
The days of finding a real bargain are long gone, things like "loss leaders" went when the internet arrived and businesses didn't have to attract you into their premises on sale day. Because they are target driven things like sales get longer and longer because, as anyone who ever worked in retail knows, if you meet your target it just gets bigger next time.

Thank goodness for the 3 camels! I checked a number of things on Amazon and very few had a real discount and none of them had the discount advertised.
 
I would say its a longer day/event than what the OP stated originally; we tend to get early Black Friday offers earlier in November these days.

.I always think I'm going to get some good deals but I find by the time the actual day comes along, its all a bit of a damp squib.

Isn't that a bit like complaining about cats being carnivores?

All shops are businesses and all but a tiny minority exist to make a profit. Very few shops have more than a very limited control over the pricing of their goods, because that's driven by the price their suppliers demand, the running costs of the shop (such as rent and taxes), the costs of funding their stock, the wages they pay to staff and the profits on which the owners rely for their own survival.

Any shop that wishes to remain viable, sells what they believe their customers wish to buy, at the price they hope the customer is willing to pay. Expecting anything else seems rather foolish to me.

" British retailers reported lacklustre sales in November, according to industry data on Tuesday affected by the timing of the Black Friday sales, although it still pointed to weakening consumer confidence.Sales volumes dropped by 3.3% in the 12 months to November, the weakest reading since April when they fell 4.0%, and below an increase of 0.6% in the year to October. Last month's decline reflected the fact that this year's data did not include Black Friday sales in late November, which will be reflected in the December numbers, though they were included in last year's comparison"

"While it was undoubtedly a bad start to the festive season, the poor spending figures were primarily down to the movement of Black Friday into the December figures this year,"

As I mentioned in WCMUT we got an excellent Samsonite suitcase, which arrived today ,and is the highest quality, £239 down to £172 which included £20 -odd for signing up to their advertising letter. Can always unsubscribe. The Which? magazine has pointed out that sometimes products were cheaper earlier in the year so this Black Friday isn't all it's cracked up to be (as Trevor (Sky) mentions and I suspect retailers use it to offload goods that have not sold as they expected but there are really good bargains for the savvy shopper.

Virtually all businesses exist to make a profit. Not much point in having a shop if it doesn't sell what people want. Just because it maybe doesn't sell what you want, doesn't mean it doesn't serve a purpose.
 
Wife is looking for some new carpeting, local place has a 50% off sale, sales guy was pushing this discount heavily, so I asked if they could afford to reduce prices so much and still make a profit/living weren’t they 50% overpriced in the first place? Silence from the chap then.
 
Life is turning into one long marketing exercise. The minute my grandson was born, the vultures were swooping with "offers" on various bits of merchandise (including photography!!!), for the "memories" of his birthday. It's not long since we lost my dad and they were even trying to sell us "memorial" stuff whilst arranging the funeral and after the service (which was videoed, in case we wanted to buy videos to send to folks who couldn't be there! What with "presents" for all occasions under the sun, we are just bombarded with sales patter, our whole lives! Black Friday = Black World Year Round. The best bargain is to keep your money in your pocket, unless you really need (not want) the item!
