Has anyone else joined in on the Black Day protest on Flickr?

It's to inform Flickr that some of us are not happy with the proposed changes that's going to happen with the site, which have been an option on beta.

What does everyone think?

By the way I did do a search before posting, but nothing came up. I am sure though that there must have been a thread on here about it! :-)

TBH, I can't see the point. With the amount of people who use flickr, the number of these being uploaded is going to be minimal. If you hate the changes that much, use another online hosting service, there are plenty of them. There are much more important things in the world to worry about that this that's for sure.

I've just had a scout through flickr this morning, haven't seeing any of these

I'm with Fabs on this, had a few followers with this on their recent uploads and didn't know what it was all about!
I look at explore to get ideas and inspiration as am still learning, the inspiration is lacking as there's more and more stuff on there that I'd sent to the trash bin, been using 500px more lately and if people dislike flickr then move on and move away.

Nice idea but won't make a jot of difference.

I agree that there is much more in the world to worry about it. I'm not wholly gung-ho about it all. I'll prob still stick with Flickr TBH when/if the changes are made. Ive tried to use 500px but not sure how it works! I've read loads of threads in Flickr groups complaining about the changes, and think Flickr should at least acknowledge they've listened to their customers.

Uploading the protest image didn't take much time out of my day and I'm not going to loose to much sleep of I wake up in the morning and they have changed it. I'm more about the idea that companies just don't listen to their customers more.

The reason for my post was to gauge response to the protest and changes on Flickr. As you can tell from my view I'm airing to the side of the protest but not quite to a full blown upset/rant or melt down if they change the site.

I think it's pathetic and annoying. I follow people to be inspired by their photography, not to see pointless rubbish such as the above. Flickr are innovating and evolving. If people don't like it they can go close their accounts. What a rubbish world it would be if companies never evolved their products.

I don't think it pathetic standing up against something you believe in. I agree, I follow people too to be inspired. I also embrace change, and think its positive when companies evolve their products or services. But only when it's for the better. If some of the services are reduced paying customers feel a little let down, and rightly so. If the service hasn't been reduced and are hidden or thees a new way of accessing them, then Flickr should offer an overview to encourage/ support the change positively. Otherwise they'll loose custom which can only be negative for the community.

Thank you for your comments above.

I think the changes on this site/app have been for the better. It's user friendly, smart and slick. Got more benefits etc. This kind of change is very positive! Change for change sake and a reduction in product isn't in my opinion, which causes people to be a little negative. There will be some people who will leave, I think others like me will make the protest in the outside chance that Flickr/Yahoo may listen (even if they don't act) then we will get back to enjoying photography and uploading to Flickr and sharing our images with the least disruption too our sleep as possible!

thats exactly what most people that complained about this place changing said.

I'm surprised at that! There's tons of new stuff on here (especially the app) to make the change positive.

There's always people who take an instant dislike to change. But it would be boring everyone had the exact same views!

Thank you for your comments Neil :-)

Like Meteorry wrote on Flickr.

"Once again, Flickr have selfishly changed things without thinking about what its members think. I have become used to the last change, and am not happy to protect until I know what I'm protesting about, but agree with my Flickr friends and this time I am happy to support them.

If you have not tried out the beta (or are one of the fortunate ones that did not have it forced upon you) then consider yourselves lucky. Here are just a few of the things one can find in the new Flickr that will be coming our way...

- A tiny area for your description relegated to the upper right corner of your screen. Telling the story behind your photo is no longer important and is hidden (must click a button to see the entire narrative) if the description is more than a sentence or two.
- Links in descriptions are now hidden.
- Descriptions in general are more difficult to format.
- The comment area is tiny as well. Only room for a "nice photo", unless you hit the "more" button. And only four comments are shown...unless you push a "more" button (they do love this "more" button!).
- No graphics can be added to your comments. For some that may mean no awards or group graphics, for others it means no outtakes or additional shots that you may want to have accompany your primary photo.
- Speaking of comments...they are now in reverse order. So, say, you are having a conversation in your comment area it will be more difficult to follow (goodbye community). Also, you cannot reply to more than one person at a time.
- Invitations to groups in comments? You got it, not visible either.
- One last thing on comments. You can't edit them.
- Favorites are now strictly anonymous.
- All lettering is white on a black background. This is very difficult, if not impossible, for some people to read.
- When you click on someone's photo you are basically trapped there, as the Flickr toolbar disappears. The only option you have is to go to their photostream (where the bar will reappear) or use your browser's back arrows. Because this makes navigating so much more cumbersome, I stopped commenting on photos when I was forced into the beta seveal weeks ago.

This is just a small sampling of the issues with the new photopage...let your voices be Heard!"

I can't be bothered to reply to all of this, but his last point (for example) is rubbish. He says "When you click on someone's photo you are basically trapped there, as the Flickr toolbar disappears. Because this makes navigating so much more cumbersome, I stopped commenting on photos when I was forced into the beta seveal weeks ago." That's rubbish, when you click on someone's photo you will see an X on the top corner of the page. Press it, and you go back to where you were.

TBH, that tirade loses all credibility when it begins with:

Once again, Flickr have selfishly changed things without thinking about what its members think....

Given that it is still in beta and that there is the button at the bottom

I think the opposite is more likey

If you don't like it take your money elsewhere.

It cost me a pittance to host my images there, it's easy to share them if I want to, I use groups and follow people so as long as I can do that I'm happy.

It's not like you have to pay to use Flickr, or even use it at all. Don't like the changes find another site. I like it myself.

I went back to the old version yesterday, within 5 minutes I went back to the beta version.

I only get the old version on the iPad but on the computer I get the choice, I opted in and it's wonderful, so I wouldn't want to go back to the old version :)

Personally I like the new look, as with any changes it will take time till you get used to it, I suspect most that don't like it will still be using Flickr in 12 months time

I agree, think this is what will exactly happen! Flickr (or insert any big company name) knows it and it's why a lot of people don't feel they listen to what the customer wants. Maybe we fall into the trap they set when they ask us for feedback! :-)

But as pointed out earlier, they ARE soliciting feedback.
