As the weather met with the usual Bank Holiday expectation I thought I'd have a go at creating a black background portrait using my new soft and Canon 430 flash. I manged to produce final results that I was pleased with by feathering the light and bringing it in close. However the image on my camera screen - an EOS40D showed more background detail than the images I imported to Lightroom.

Any advice please.

What you're seeing on your camera screen is a JPEG that's been processed with the in-camera settings. So:

Your computer presumably took the RAW and did nothing to increase the shadows.

OR:
Your computer screen needs calibrating

OR:

Your import settings have amended the file

In other words - there's not enough information in your post to give us an answer to the question, but hopefully I've given some pointers that might help.

Thanks Phil. I think it's your first suggestion as I can pull up the detail in LR. It was my first go at trying to get a black background with one flash. I set the camera to manual mode to kill any ambient light and then just lit the model (me !!) with the flash. It was a bit disconcerting when you're trying to learn something to see parts of the background lit on the preview screen !
