Black and White

Hi all I have time on my hands right now and as a novice have been trying a little of everything.

My question is when would i know i have a true black and white image using Lightroom or Photoshop. Is there a way that you can tell you have the image the perfect shades of black and white. I have been messing about wit h several images today for practice then when I look at some professional shots my lot look flat and boring

You can check the blacks and the white by using the a levels layer in PS and holding down the pointer at each end whilst pressing the alt key on your keyboard, this will only highlight the whites or blacks.

Black and white images often benifit from a shallow S curve to boost contrast slightly.
