Black and white tutorials

Hi,
I am just starting to learn and have been looking through some of the portrait forums.
I really like the look of some of the black and white images with that quite light/dark shadow look, which is good for me as I only have a 430 flash and a reflector lol.

I use lightroom and have tried to follow Kelby book on converting to black and white. However is has turned out a bit so so.

Does anyone have any links that might be able to help me?

Im still a new user of Lightroom and PS and also quite new to the digital world, however ive found that Lightrooms preset B&W settings work really well for me, simply right click on the image, go to settings and then presets, I often use this and then tweak later for maybe a bit more light/contrast but often ive just stuck with the presets
