Black and white project ahead......

Which software do you have? That will make it easier to point you in the right direction.

Mark, It looks like i posted this twice, but thanks for coming back to me.

I use Lightroom. I will be going back to old files and converting, and I've started playing around with a few of them.

It looks like "black and white mix" sliders are pretty crucial......

They're very important, as you've found.

Personally I'd not use lightroom: either Nik Silver efex (free) or On1 perfect effects (probably also free - they often give it away). Both are really good at B&W. Nik is a little simpler and looks quite decently authentic, but can introduce lots of artefacts if you start to push things a little. PE is much, much more powerful and has some great presets, but requires more care to produce something that looks like it might have come from film.

Hello Jeremy. Judging by your site you'll do well at B&W. Very well written and presented.

There's so much flexibility in software for B&W processing and some photographers have a style of their own. Some produce very dramatic results, but it can be too much. Targeting every pixel of a particular colour sometimes isn't ideal in Lightroom. Having an image in layers in image-editing software and using a targeted B&W plug-in on each can get better results, but it's a bit more work bringing things together.

Anyway, I use Lightroom and the Topaz plug-in and find them both quite versatile.
