I'm trying to facilitate the purchase of some glass from this very forum only to be told by my online banking that the sort code entered is invalid. It seems perfectly sound to me, being six digits and being exactly what I was told. Any one know why this may be? Am I resigned to presenting myself at the desk of my bank tomorrow in order to make a payment?

does it want the dashes 99-99-99

maybe only works with English sort-codes?

maybe the sort code you have been given is incorrect and the code (whilst being the correct xx-xx-xx format fails as it has some inbuilt checkdigit to ensure the code is correct

Can you not contact the member to check in case they have made a mistake
Is it a member that's been around awhile?
I am sure it will be fine but it might be worth just double checking

Is that not an English sort code? The member on here is from England so that surprises me.

aha saw your name wondered if it was your sort code being rejected!

sorry - no offence meant

I'll help!

If you send me your bank account details and sort code and the recipients bank account details and sort code, I'll make a payment to the recipient on your behalf. To keep costs down, I'll send a payment a little bit higher than it should be, but it'll be OK because the recipient can then send me a cheque for the overpayment back.

You can send me a cheque for the amount to send on but because I trust you I'll even send the money on before I get the cheque!

I'll send the recipient the money through Western Union.

Very long-term member with almost 2,000 posts - reputation isn't really what I'm concerned about here as he also has 3 iTrader ratings.

mmcp42, none taken! Thanks for trying to help.

Blapto, thanks for the offer of help. That sounds a good way around this, thanks. I'll PM you my details.

The sort code itself won't be check digit verified but it must be a valid code, based on a lookup of the latest released codes (using something such as Bankwizard).

However, the Sort Code/Account Number combination will typically be subject to check digit verification. If it is being rejected and you are happy that you are keying the details correctly, then it implies that you have been provided with a duff combination.

By the way, what is the 6 digit sort code?

Chris

Sounds like it might just be an error in the info you were supplied then.
Double checking with the "person concerned" would be the best option I guess

Problem solved - error in the information supplied to me.

Thanks for your willingness to help anyway guys, but this one can be locked.
