Birmingham standoff (don't worry - it's not that serious)

About 9:30 this morning a bloke parks his car in a disabled bay in Brum. Parking Warden tickets him and a tow truck turns up to take his car away. After the car has been put on the lorry, he somehow manages to get into it. They can't move the lorry with him in the car ('elf and safety) and he won't get out of the car. Presumably they won't just let him drive off because he's an idiot.

Some comments so far:

"Some passers by seem to have had a few, a couple have hurled some abuse at Matthew Sanders.

"They've been moved on by police.

"Drinkers from the Sun on the Hill have come over the road, they're singing to the car, police attempting to move them on.

"Given the number of pubs around here I can only see this sort of hassle getting worse.

"Passer by just asked police: 'Can you go around the corner and we can drag him out?'
"The police decline."

Oh yeah, he's still there after about 8 hours :D

I wonder where he thought he was going to spend Christmas?

Why the h... did he park in a disabled bay ?

I don't think he has much of a chance of getting away with this.If the car was still on the ground he might have.I don't think this is a stand off. The truck cannot move the car with him in it so it cannot put it back on the ground even if they wanted to. I am thinking that he could get done under section 5 if he is not careful.

I don't doubt he'll pay his parking fine for his misdemeanour but in the meantime it has all gone a bit 'Little Malcolm and his Struggle Against the Eunuchs'!

David Halliwell's plays could rewrite themselves with this country's modern jobsworhts!

"Hail Scrawdyke" and good luck to him! ;)

Sadly (for all us people who like to laugh at stuff like this) sanity has prevailed.

"Mansfield have agreed to drop his car off, his parking ticket will still apply.

"'That's all I wanted from the beginning,' says Matthew.

"Truce has been brokered by a bobby on the scene."

I suppose it was the usual - " oh look a parking space - here goes " the fact there was a sign there about disabled parking just didn't register with him .

I would love to hear why he thought he could just use that particular space. Selfish Git that he is

Probably because as usual there was nowhere to park and the disabled bays were empty. Not saying it is right but I'd imagine that is what would have happened. In London half the blue badges are either fake or misused.

The man drives a Tigra what more is there to say. I think it is sad that we give in to idiots like that. If he wants to put himself in danger than so be it.

None of which is a reason to use them.

Personally I think the police should of dragged him out the car and arrested him, rather then allowing him to carry on like this

I must admit I read the update above as "a truce has been brokered by a baby".

I need more sleep

I'm pretty sure that if he'd committed an arrestable offence then they would have done. But it seems that sitting peacefully in your car on top of a lorry isn't actually something you can get arrested for yet. Neither is being an idiot.

Good thing there was a sensible copper about. It was one of those where neither side could back down so an amicable truce is a good result all round.

H&S gone mental again. Should have just taken him to the pound as well.
Of course it's annoying when you can't find a space, but he knew the consequences so tough.
I'd not be surprised if this turns out to be far more expensive for him and he receives a bill for the truck and drivers time. Followed civil proceedings to reclaim them if he declines.

the best response to parking is a disabled bay i've seen was in milton keynes , where someone applied a large and very sticky label to the centre of the muppets windscreen saying "stupidity is not a disability, please park elsewhere in future"

I've seen signs in some places [ certainly in France ] where the sign is large and says words to the effect of

" Take my place - take my disability "

I remember one time just as I was about to drive into a spot a little car whizzed in - a very athletic mum got out and started to run to the lift down to the shops.

I spluttered and asked why she was parking there - seems the badge was for her son - he was in Nursery full time and after she had done her shopping she would walk to the Nursery and collect him !!

There were no spaces left in the car park - so I and my car went home - my shopping was not done that day

He goes into a tirade about human rights and how they were trying to "steal" his car but not once did he explain why he had parked in a disabled bay or admit that he was wrong to do so. Seems he is very hot on stick ing up for his rights but couldn't give a stuff about other peoples'!

on the bbc site, he said he had no issue with being caught or paying the fine

Yep and her also had no issue with parking in a disabled bay either.

I'm so used to people parking in disabled bays when they don't have a blue badge its not a shock anymore (dad has a blue badge). people will park where they want or speed because they don't see anything wrong with it. No stigma to the crime. I see it all the time at work - There is a certain type that I see doing it the most

Popped out in my lunchbreak the other day. 3 disabled bays, one car parked in one space (with blue badge) and a van straddling the other 2! The van driver came out with a bag from Burger King. There were plenty of other parking spaces available but he parked in a disabled bay to save himself a 20 foot walk so yes, there is a certain type who do it, lazy arsed inconsiderate t***s!

Park across behind them and explain why you've done it. If it's a company van, call the company and complain (less effective if it's a one man band but would work for a proper company).

I have done that before but I would have been blocking the road. I just parked across 2 normal bays a little further down. There was no company livery on the van.

Also worth reporting it to the store (if it's a shop car park), they're usually quite hot on it.

Though they have very little power of enforcement, sadly.
