Well,

I fitted my new bird table today complete with feeder, 1 hour later and nothing not a Woodpecker, Kestral or even a Kingfisher :suspect:

Seriously tho, any tips for enticing my feathered friends along, I have added unit full of nuts and a flat bowl full of food

Please be aware I now NOTHING about this at all

any tips greatly appreciated

Stephen

I'm not sure waiting 1 hour is quite long enough, Stephen!

I expect a little more patience will be rewarded. :naughty:

Have you put up some perches near to the feeders?

Birds will often land here first, allowing for more natural looking photos.

As someone else who has only just put a feeder in I just left it a couple of days before getting the kit out and waiting. 1st day nothing (that I spotted), 2nd day I didn't see anything but noticed it had been used as there were bits on the round below. By the end of the first week I was getting regular visits from BTs and the leftovers on the ground were attracting dunnocks, blackbirds and robins. The general activity round my tiny garden is increasing constantly. FYI my feeder has peanuts and sunflower hearts in it plus some suet with more hearts and cruched nuts mixed in. It's placed right next to a rose bush which everything lands on before going for din-dins.

I'm only practising at the moment so no good ones to show here yet, I'm going to have to move it closer to where I sit first and, once they're all used to it, I'll be moving it progressively closer.

Water............... birds will travel further for water than food.

I scattered lots of bread around the area the feeder was firstly the larger birds came and then once the bread had gone the smaller birds came for the nuts in the feeder

White Sunflower hearts work for us,the birds fight to get on the feeders, but the Squirrel mostly wins, they all seem to like them, finches, tits, starlings, doves, all go for them, good luck attracting them :-)

Thanks for the replys

Day 2 and not a sausage....or a bird

I will try and get some sort of perch near it, as its just hanging on the fence at the moment

It's too low down and too near bushes that big scary cats will hide in! They need to be able to see if there is any danger lurking

Thanks, I posted the picture for that reason, I had a feeling it was a bit low, trouble is in a bit stuck for higher positions, could maybe get it up a foot and move the nut holder

What about putting it on a free-standing post, Stephen.

Also, from a photographic point of view, it would be better with some distance behind. Maybe place perch between you & those bushes on the right, then you'll get better background/bokeh.

I didn't really want a free standing one but in hindsight I think that's probably the answer

Where do you think the perch would be best

Sorry to ask such dumb questions but my knowledge of birds stops at KFC

A 3mtr long 2" post will cost about £3 odd from a timber supplier, site that in amongst those shrubs somewhere and it will not look out of place, fix your bracket and feeder to it and away you go. As it is it is a little bit out of view for most birds I would imagine, plus as mentioned a little bit low for predators. As for waiting it could be a week or so but once they find it they will not forget where it is.

My brothers made the bird house (they have a little business making these and others styles) and are now making me a nice stand to place it on along with a perch
