Hi

I’m not really a massive nature type person, but I really love birds in flight, ( birds of prey mainly) water mammals etc, never really tried to photograph any of these, but I’ve just got a D500 and really would like to try.

Does anyone know of places around Somerset I could go, or info on how to find places I may find the above animals ?

Just looking for starting points or likely places to find the above.

Cheers

Thank you, looks perfect for a starting point (y)

Yes Ham Wall is a good start, there are Otters there as well as Mink and a varied selection of waterbirds.
Shapwick Heath (across the road from Ham Wall is also a good site with similar wildlife and at the moment I think there is still an Osprey around Noah's Lake but it won't be there for much longer.

Hi, thank you, ham wall does sound good, planning a sunrise trip in the next day or two, is shapwick heath open throughout like ham wall or is it a pay to play type place ? Tried but website for it won’t load.

Osprey would be epic do you know how much longer they hang around ?

Shapwick is open 24 hours ... I don't know how long the Osprey has been there, they usually stay for about two weeks so if you go in the next couple of days you might just be okay.
Noah's Lake hide is half way down the near side of the lake as you approach from Ham Wall.

As a starting point for Birds of Prey, you can't get a more controlled environment than your local Falconry Centre. The will be birds pegged out and flying displays, a great place to practice.

A good starting point is the local park to get your settings right and practice tracking them with a long lens.
