I'm heading off to the Southport Airshow soon (for work purposes) and I'm hoping to shoot more than just the metal winged airborne objects.

I usually take a trip to Martin Mere while I'm there, but I wondered if there were any other locations which are worth a visit whilst I'm in the area?

Anyone from Lancashire with any good local birdy suggestions would be appreciated.

I,m heading for RSPB Leighton Moss late October, will be stopping hopefully Grisedale Farm, 2 minute walk into the reserve.

Leighton Moss is just north of Morecombe.

Pennington Flash in Leigh has bird hides around the lake. Also theres Brockholes near Preston.

If you have some time then a trip over to the Trough of Bowland AONB would probably be in order, no guarantees but quite a lot of hawks etc in this area - just have to find them!

Thanks for the pointers folks. I spent a full day at Martin Mere then went to Leighton Moss for the following day. Have to admit at being a bit disappointed by the Moss due to a lack of sightings. Just one of those days I suppose. A bit too early in the year for the Bearded Tits and no hint of a Bittern either. Hides were a bit busier than I'm used to as well, but I suppose that's what happens when you come to a country with more than ten times the population density of your own! There was even a 4pm wedding taking place in one of the hides that day! First time I've ever seen party frocks and dressy hats in a wildlife hide!

On the plus side, I saw my first ever Nuthatch on a feeder while I was eating my lunchtime soup in the 1st floor cafe. I nearly dropped my spoon when it arrived six feet from my table - just outside the window on a feeder hanging from the eaves of the building - but it wasn't a photo opportunity! :'(

The Eric Morecambe Hide could have been more productive if it hadn't been standing room only. Little Egrets, a Kingfisher flypast and (allegedly) a Pectoral Sandpiper as well as the usual array of Godwits, Lapwings and Shanks. However, it felt more like a constant stream of bus-trips were arriving and departing there.:|

pity you didn't get a chance to pop into marshside rspb while there there are a couple of well placed hides and your shooting with the sun behind you which is good ,marshside is great for close up avocets in the spring when they return to breed .
another superb spot is formby point woods N/T site just drive in past the gate 100yards then take the paths to your left for red squirrels ,carry a pocketfull off monkey nuts to ensure they come to you
