Going for a week in Lanzarote in 5weeks time mainly to get a bit of sun and hot weather after I finish my exams, I'am looking for some locations to do some birding and Landscape shots, I would love to be able to shoot some Hoopoes and waders out there or anything different really, If anyone knows any must visit locations for either birding or Landscape, if you could let me know that would be great :)

Cheers

Joe

Hi Joe,

Lanzarote is a stunning place for landscapes, I can't comment on birding locations though. Apart from the three main tourist resorts (Playa blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise) the place is pretty much all stunning / bizarre landscape, even the interior, mostly barren lava fields is photo-worthy.
The island is pretty small, you can drive from north to south in an hour or so, so as long as you have a driver, you can get to all the best spots.

For me, I'd say Famara Beach in the north, Papagayo Beach in the Sth East are the standouts beach-wise, though both attract lots of tourists, around Papagayo are a further series of beach inlets, that get less busy / not visited.

On the Sth West coast is El Golfo, a green coloured lagoon, that you ( in theory) can't get close to, but if approached from the south there is a way to walk down to it.

Just South of El Golfo are 'Los Hervideros' (means 'boiling pots') a series of rocky inlets where the sea crashes in spectacularly.

As a volcanic island, you might think of visiting Timanfaya, this is a national park of sorts, and the main area of volcanoes. However, a visit there consists of parking at a restaurant, and being herded onto a bus for a tour round the most interesting sights, you are not allowed to meander about on your own, so it's pretty useless photography wise. There are other volcanoes you can visit, less dramatic, but you can at least get closer on foot.

If you go there, or read up on Lanza you will come acroos mention of Manrique, and his influence as an artist and architect / planner is everywhere. Including 'Mirador del Rio' , which is essentially an observation point with a glorified cafe ! However it does give stunning views across to a small island off the north coast (La Gaciosa). Tho his buildings are tourist spots, rather than landscapes, they are stunning and striking, especially his house ( now the 'Cesar Manrique Foundation' and 'Jameos del agua' both worth a visit )

I'd suggest googling all the places suggested, and seeing what takes your fancy.

Hope you have a good time, and hope to see some of the photos here.

Me and Mrs Chap are going in Sept/Oct (having been a fair few times before) and I'm hoping to get some great shots myself.

I would go along with Jon for best spots for photography, I have been to Lanzarote about 22 times, but not for a few years due to illness.

Some other places which maybe of interest is the Rubicon Marina which is in between Playa Blanca and Papagayo, it's a newish marina built in old Lanzarote style, I have had some good pics there of of fish in the marina along with the birds that frequent here. For the last 6 or so holidays we have stayed in Costa Calero, which is next to Puerto del Carmen. Whilst staying there I have seen some JPS racing type boats there and I have also seen the owner of SAGA Holidays boat moored there, it's nice to see how the other half live. Also, you will see throughout the island Larni's restraunts, the owner used to live in Costa Calero and again it's nice to see his boats in the marina.

La Geria is the wine growing area of the island, it's interesting to see how they have laid the land out for growing these vines considering the lava which the island is built on.

For Mirador del Rio, dont pay to go into the cafe just park outside and you will get some good photo opportunities there.

If you go inland it can be breezy and due to the lava and sea air there can be some very fine dust, so if you dont use filters now I would recommend buying some to protect your glass.

I have allways hired a car and it's an easy island to drive around as nowhere is to big and busy, providing you stay out of Arrecife the capital, although it wasn't to bad driving round there. Last time we went as there was six of us, we hired a Mercedes Vito minibus, even that was easy to drive around the island.

Enjoy your holiday and it is a great island to be on. For me it's the most scenic out of all the Canaries and I have visisted all of them, with several stays at Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuertanventura and the smaller island which escapes my mind now, La gomera???

:agree: with the above, good tip for Mirador Del Rio! The same for the "vineyards", weird little stone circles (which are also on some beaches too). I've not visited the Marina, that'll be on the list this time.
This might be worth considering, this company,

good reviews on trip advisor, tho not used them myself, does volcano tours, Graciosa trips...and it seems a specific Birdwatching one. ( We'll be doing the Bodega Hopping and Volcano ones in Sept)

6 hours for €39 doesn't seem bad for birding, but that's not my thing, so no idea o_O

How did you get one with the lansdcape shots? I'm off there myself on a few weeks, and as I said, hoping to do the same. ( though without the birds)
Are any l/scapes you shot online ? (seen the one posted on a thread here, where was that taken ? )

Cheers for locations previously Jon, I will defo go on that Birdwatching trip next year when I go, in regards to landscape locations I would recommend the best for sunset shots would be papagayo beach, for example if you haven't already seen it here is my shot of it

Famara is another good location to go to shoot some landscape photography, and some interesting objects, the sun I found normally is best in the afternoon there as in the morning it over the sea and when you try to take images of the cliffs its just blown out due to shooting into the sun, I got a interesting image there of a Salinas Windmill which seem to be all over the island. Check out my shot here if your interested.

Another must go location is Mirador del rio which has epic views, not my shot but this shows you a good overview of the place http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ca/Pano_Mirador_del_Rio_Lanzarote.jpg

The Boat trip to La Graciosa also offers some stunning views and lovely beaches great for photography, if you are going there though go early! Its a island with no shelter and very open! and midday its gets extremely hot, not sure if its this time of year but La Graciosa seems to get 5c hotter than Lanza! Think that is all the places I visited but if you have a google about I'am sure there is more, I mainly went for wildlife and same again I will be doing next year, so hopefully these locations are of help to you :)

Lanzarote is a stunning place for photography, some of the places are beautiful.

I've just got back (I didn't take my DSLR this time!) - if you can find somewhere to stop en-route to Timanfaya then you could basically be on the moon - it's a very strange landscape.

We went on some Segways and was taken upto a lovely nature park just outside of Playa Blanca - you had great views of the surrounding beaches / volcanoes from the top of the cliffs.
