Just a quick question for all you bird/wildlife togs, is using a battery grip when out togging a help or a hindrence? or do you find it makes no difference?, especially when using a tripod/monopod?. Thanks.
 
I have had one fitted for quite a while now Gareth, I am sure we will all have different opinions. For me I feel comfortable having it when handholding, on the downside for me at the moment I need to get something put in place to raise it slightly if I want to use the tripod mount which is on the 100-400mm. The locking catch snags against the bottom of the grip and does not allow me to lock it using this method. Having the quick release plate attached to the bottom of the drive puts a bit of a strain on it.
 
morning rich, i will be using a D200 + 300mm f4 + 1.4 tc, it has a fixed tripod ring, and i was thinking with that amount of weight (2lbs+) the battery grip would give me more management over the overall weight of the system, especially on a monopod. Or would a monopod + beanbag be a better way, over a tripod, as i will be shooting from a lot of hides.

Have not really checked it out but I would imagine if you use the tripod ring then it is at or near to centre of gravity, so adding a grip would not upset it that much. Imo they are more to do with comfort rather than anything else, oh and it makes your camera bigger than the guy next door :lol: As for support, a mono has the advantage for BIF shots, or a tripod with Gimbal head or similar would be good. I use a tripod, that way if I let it go my camera and lens dont fall to the ground :thumbs:
 
Thanks for that rich, just ordered a manfrotto monopod, so i will have a look at a decent tripod as well, maybe carbon fibre? dont know yet. I did a trade with dan (djaphoto) for my D300 for a 300mm f4 + 1.4 tc + extra, so i have no body at the moment!,:lol:, just ordered a D200 from mpb boxed, everything with it, only problem is the flash catch is not working properly but should be an easy fix+ a MB-D200 grip, so i cant wait to get out with D200+ 300mm and get shooting.
