Bird photography

I keep having problems photographing birds (feathered). I can never gret a good enough image.





I keep getting told that I need to get nearer, but every time I try and get closer the little blighters fly off.

This morning I discovered what I was doing wrong. I have been trying to photograph the wrong sort of birds. As long as you pick the right sort it is no problem at all to get an image that fills the screen.

Try positioning yourself and getting the birds to come to you!! Set up a hide in your location, leave it a few days, feed close to it, then get in it and you should have your birds near by!!!

LOL. Birds do have a sort of invisiible tolerance radius, but get comfortable and be patient - keeping low is less intimidating to the birds, so get seated if you can, and keep as still as possible - avoid sudden movements which spook the birds.

Make sure you're wearng warm clobber and be prepared to sit it out a while - don't expect immediate results.

What lens are you using?

I wouldn't think of trying to shoot most birds with anything less than my 300mm f/4. If they're in flight, even that's usually not long enough.

Patience, stealth, cunning and some luck

Camera on a tripod helps if you are out in the open as the action of raising the camera is likely to spook them.
