Bird Photography Challenge No3

OK my prize is to set the next challenge.

In keeping with the last challenge to try and ensure that anyone can enter regardless of skill or equipment, or location I intend to set something with enough scope that anyone can enter.

I propose the next subject is simply Water, this should leave enough room for some different interpretation, and should not be reliant on having telephoto lenses.

It also means that there is enough scope in location from the bird bath in your garden, to the sea.

I thought I could put this here for a couple of days to hear any comments before setting a start and finish date.

UPDATE :rules:

OK then WATER is the theme for the 3rd Bird Photography Challenge.

Image must include at least one bird, and some form of water, in whatever proportions you see fit.

You can enter one image only, this can be edited / changed at any time through the course of the challenge.

Images must be taken and submitted between Saturday 16th May 09 and midnight Sunday 14th June 09.

Entry should be made on the Bird Photography Challenge No3 Thread

Good luck

Does that mean just water or birds and water ? sorry to be thick but!

and the title of the thread is

Bird Photography Challenge No3 - Discussion

:)
sounds good to me!
:)

I suppose it could just be water if you have a diving bird on your hands ;)

Good choice...loads of scope!

For someone who is new on here I have to ask these questions, it seems that all these forums are designed for the "know it alls"

I have not done or come across any challenges before and some of us "useless" photographers would like to have a go and be sure of what they are doing.

I ask questions and ask for pointers but never seem to get them so will have to resort to a book I think( that is why I have posted about which book to get) so as to not ask any questions and be a menace or a pain.:shake:

I think the reply to your question sounded harsher than it was meant, don't worry! :) The challenge was started for just this purpose...to help us mere mortals out with our bird photography! No 600mm lenses in sight and so on :)

It's a bird on/in/above the water.... Sounds good to me.....Is this comp open now, or still in the discussion stages?
:D

It is Birds and Water, and I will open it once all the details are ironed out.

Probably from this weekend running for 4 weeks, but I will confirm that and start a post in the 'Birds' critique forum.

I hoped that I would see at least one bird, and at least some water, however in what proportions is entirely up to the photographer, this leaves some scope for some lateral thinking, and artistic licence.

The intention is to enable anyone, of any skill level to enter, your questions are welcome.

On the subject of a book try "Digital Exposure Handbook" by Ross Hoddinatt easy to follow and understand.

Briony - this might be of interest.....

http://www.mikeatkinson.net/tutorials.htm

Someone else posted it a while ago and it's quite interesting.

Just jump in and have a go Briony. I am new here and have found that the more experienced members are happy to give you pointers. You just need to catch peoples eye with an interesting title to your thread. I never take brilliant photos and only have a point and shoot camera but I have joined in a couple of challenges just for the fun of it and the experience.
Sue:)

Thanks guys, Crusher, that link you gave is fantastic, I wish!!!!! what some great shots will have a read through it thoroughly later.

Why is it when you go out with the camera all the birds disappear!!!!

Briony,

Its the same in astronomy. When you get out all the heavy gear, start imaging and within 10 minutes the clouds roll in.

Good luck to you all with the competition.

John
