We've all had those shots where everything looked perfect yet when we get the image in photoshop we notice the eyes are a bit flat, slightly out of focus or just don't "pop", I've often found the first and last when shooting birds with dark eyes and dark feathers surrounding the eyes.
It got me thinking so I tried the work around I use to make human eyes "pop" a little when I'm working on portraits.
I've found it really works well especially on my cock sparrow shots where its hard to see the eye due to the dark feathers surrounding the eye
So in case members don't know here's a walk through of how I do it, this will work for all types of eye on any creature including humans.
This is using CS5, you may need to adjust certain steps/tools for your software.
Once you have completed your normal processing steps...
zoom in to the eyes, use either the lasso tool, magic wand or quick selection brush to select each eye, then right click and choose " layer via copy", ensure the new layer is highlighted so your working on it.
Go to filters - other - hi pass, select a 10 pixel radius, click ok, the eye will now have gone a pale grey colour.
Right click the layer in the layers pallette, choose blending options, select soft light/hard light or vivid light according to taste, click ok.
Finally adjust the layer opacity to suit your taste then flatten the image..
voila! sharp eyes that "pop"
