'Big sky' problem

Living in the Fens, which you may or may not know is incredibly flat and boring, and being interested in landscape photography are not a good combination.

I'm having a lot of problems with 'big sky' - photos that have some mild interest in the foreground, such as some interestingly shaped trees or a lake ... but are then dwarfed by a massive sky above a very flat horizon. I can crop it out, but that leaves a very short photo that looks kind of odd.

I just want some hills. :(

Hehe.. you could try and go for alternative angles, or use the sky when its looking interesting! i know when theres a storm coming in that area you can see it for mile, id use times like that to make it more interesting, landscape isnt just about blue skies and hillocks.. think out of the box a little and try to use some of the local features.. got any windmills up there?? bet you have.. :)

Have a look at the area from a different perspective, low down, from behind something interesting, or.. get a nice model in.. :thumbs:
 
Get a ND Grad filter to make the sky look more interesting!
 
I find that problem a lot, composition is difficult when there are just drains,dykes etc, try and find a nice gate or a bridge and use it compositionally within a storm brewing, hay bales late summer can make great photographs late in the day too.
 
Have you tried HDR for big sky images. Especially if the sky looks dramatic.
