Ok I dont know where the fault lies here but I have just fully charged one of my Canon BP-511A's and inserted it into the EOS 40D using the BG-E2 and the battery symbol is flashing saying its very low on power.

However if I insert the same battery into the body directly its fine.

Any ideas?

Early versions of the BG-E2 had an internal problem than resulted in one of two symptoms....your symptom is one of them.
Is this an older unit (2005-2006) or a recent purchase?

Mine does the same although it's not a canon grip, its a compatible. When I insert two batteries into the grip it's fine though.

If you read the manual. it tells you there are two stages when recharging the battery.

I'd certainly give the contacts a wipe over both on the grip and in the camera. But it sounds from the above posts like there may be an inherent fault.

can you tell us what they are - without everyone refering to the manual cos we all have them handy.

I would guess they are a full discharge and a over night charge for your two proceedures? Which manual? the EOS body or the grip?

Its quite a late revision I would say. I got it in about september 2006 I think.
I had one before it in 2005 but it got smashed to pieces.

did you put thebattery in the grip before you put the grip on the camera? if so, that can cause battery power reading faults
