While filming with the 550D I am contemplating a 5D simply because of the amount of low-light subjects I seem to be covering.

But the Mk II or MK III are not cheap.

Given that the 500D's colour range <seems to be> better than the 7D (in that the 550D blue range, for example, can differentiate more shades in the blue area than the 7D : test: http://www.digitalrev.com/article/canon-eos-550d-vs-7d/NTI0NA_A_A).

I wondered if there are similar differences or sensitivities between the 5D MK II and 5D MK III and if anyone has had any experience of either to point me in the direction to make the right buying decision?

As ever, thank you to everyone here for such valuable assistance.

I wouldn't take that much notice of such badly done tests as a start point.

The 550d and 7d share the same sensor, there's little processing difference within the cameras and the Raw data ought to be as much as manufacturing variance.

However the 5d mk II and mk III are diferent sensors, I'd expect the newer one to be a great improvement and a decent testing site would probably give more detail.

The right buying decision would be based around the real world differences between the 2 cameras, if I was desperate tomorrow I could stretch to a MkII but if I was choosing on spec; for me it'd be a mk III.

HI Pete

If I could afford and was looking at upgrading to full frame, I'd be looking at the 5D mkIII.

Another alternative is the 6D - has £150 cash back from Canon at the moment and Jessops also have £150 discount on it...

mkII and mkIII are totally different cameras apart from similar form factor and '5D' in the name. mkIII obviously has a lot better sensor, but most important of all it has reliable AF

btw. You will find that both have massively better IQ than 500/600/700D (all same sensor :) ). In fact 5D original was already very far ahead.
