The EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM and the EF100-400mm 4.5-5.6 L IS USM make up the backbone of ny bag for rallying but I would like to invest in a quality wide angle lens to cover the inside on junctions plus promotional work what would be my best choice?

24-70 F2.8L or 24-105 F4L, assuming you're not wanting a prime

Isnt the 10-20 is too wide?

I would go for something like the 17-40L or 24-105L.

King.

I wouldn't want to be close enough to use a 10-20

17-40 is the minimum you'd need. 24-70 a better bet

You don't say what camera. Crop factor has an impact on right WA. On full frame, I have rarely found a need for wider than 24mm outdoors. Reckon a 17-40 would be a good bet or a 24-105 as a good pairing with the 100-400

I have used my 16-35 at Silverstone in the pit area on 1.6 crop factor cameras. The wide end only becomes useful if you are in a confined space and want a picture of a car you are standing beside, closer than you are likely to get to rally car in action. I reckon it would be a great excuse to buy a 24-70 F2.8 L. (see other replies in thread from dod and evilowl) There is one on my shopping list. This is a superb lens and would take you nicely up to your 70-200.
It is a long time since I have been to a decent rally, I envy you the opportunity to attend Irish tarmac events.

The 10-20 was a joke. I do feel that at 10mm you would have to be riding the bonnet to get a nice shot.
