This may seem like a daft question but what is the best way of keeping negatives safe and organised?

'Safe' isn't too bad -you can store them in readily available sleeves made from chemically safe paper in short strips. Keeping them flat is obviously important to prevent creasing, and store them in the dark, well away from UV light. A fire proof cabinet is usually recommended for pro storage of negs if you want to take it that far. The loss of thousands of negs would be pretty disastrous for anyone, but more so for a pro relying on resales.

'Organised' is a bit more tricky. Thousands of negs can become a nightmare if you can't find one when you want it, so a properly indexed storage system is a good idea from the outset. Contact print sheets are a good visual reference, but need to be cross referenced to the particular film/neg. A bit of thought in setting up a good system will pay dividends in the long run.

A cool environment is also advantageous.

:I agree with both above ,I keep my negs in box files type ring binders useing sleeves I bought on E Bay Loersch 645 and 35mm and I punch two holes in contact sheet then place contact on top of negs in binder place on top shelves in darkroom ,dark and cool.

I do what Bronikon does! I have big ringbinder, I have contact sheets in one "sleve" then the negs behind it, then another contact sheet, and more negs behind it etc... i just store them by Date (or, during my A-Levels- by "course unit")-AKA subject matter.

actually, thinking about it, I find storing pics on a PC harder than negatives! Im just buried under images with no idea how to sort them!

yes, though I don't like that paper stuff (rips easily etc) so I use negative-friendly plastic ones.
