I currently use Lightroom 3.3 on my Desktop and Laptop. I use one large catalogue of all my photos, I keep this synced by storing all the photos on my NAS drive and keep the catalogue file in my dropbox.. This is a wee bit slow but works fine. I'm going away for a few days to a hotel and will take my camera & laptop, so my question is.

What is the best way to edit my photos while away? so I can add them (with their lightroom edits back to my original catalogue?

Cheers

I'd start a new catalogue for the shoot in your Lr on the laptop. Once back export the catalogue and import (or merge) into your desktop pc

You've got a couple of options. Both require as Jim suggested starting a new catalogue on your laptop. Edit and organise your images in the normal on your laptop. Now to get them onto your desktop,

First way is to export catalogue with digital negatives option. This generates a complete catalogue, and includes copies of the original files. Now simply use the import catalogue option from Lightroom on your desktop. Advantage, everything is in one place, and you still have the originals on the laptop. Disadvantage, it does take time. probably not a problem if you have a relatively small number of images, but could be if there are a lot of them.

Second option is again use the Export Catalogue option on the laptop, but without the inclusion of the digital negative option. Now copy the images from the laptop to your desktop and place them in the location you want to store them. Import the laptops catalogue. You'll find errors as the desktop version of Lightroom cant locate the images. Now use the UPDATE folder location option. point it to where the images are stored and Lightroom will update the data. The advantage is that can be a quicker option. but not as tidy as the first.
