Best ultra-wide lens for controlling flare?

I have a mad idea for a possible project next summer which would require me to be shooting landscapes into the sun, with the sun actually in the frame. To get the effects I want, I reckon I'll need to use a lens with a focal length of 16mm or less.

Ordinarily I'd just reach for the trusty Canon 10-22mm. But before I do that, it would be really helpful to know whether there are any other ultra-wide lens options out there which are significantly better at controlling flare.

Any suggestions? (Canon or Nikon systems only, please.) Have you experience of any ultra-wides that were particularly good in this department? Have you seen any comparisions published? Have you seen this topic discussed elsewhere?

Thanks in advance for your help.

May be a daft suggestion, but could you not just use a polariser?
I might. But I don't think that would stop lens flare. I'd have thought it might even add to it, by putting more bits of glass between the sun and the sensor.

I've used my 14L for a few night shots and it's certainly not immune from street lighting induced flare....I suspect that the sun would be similarly troublesome.

I would think that a prime lens would give better results than a zoom, as they usually have fewer lens elements, so are less prone to flare. Something to do with the number of air to glass surfaces I think.

Sounds like a fascinating project!

I would have a rummage through your stock and do some test shots with whatever lenses you can find in there - I'm sure one of them will give decent results! FWIW, my 12-24 Sigma is pretty good with regard to flare - not perfect but it can't be. Obviously, make sure whatever lens you use is as clean as you can possibly get it.

The Nikkor 14-24 and Nikkor 17-35 are VERY flare resistant.

You can point both at the sun and have it in the frame and you don't get flare. The 17-35 might produce a single green ghost.
