Let me first state that I am from the United States first. I took my first trip to London in 2007 late October early November and I happened to run into a group of people from this forum. I am looking into making a repeat trip this year at some point to visit London again and go to some place in France. Can any of you suggest your favorite time of the year to do your traveling?

On my first trip I had just picked up my first DSLR (Canon 10D used) and now I have upgraded to a 40D and now a few weeks ago a 7D. When I visited I spread my time across the UK, Belgium, Netherlands and Ireland all in 2 weeks. This time I am taking another 2 week trip and limiting the trip to 2 countries as to not be rushed.

Maybe see some of you when I come over this year.

Don't come yet, it's wet and not that nice, May/June can be nice months but it's the UK, anything can happen

What sort of photography do you like, have you considered The Normandy battlefields in France where the D Day landings took place or Bruges in belguim, historical and photogenic, for places to go within an easy drive or train ride from London ,

Cambridge, a lot of photo opportunities there, about 60 miles

Warwick castle, in the summer they put on some spectacular medieval events. about 100 miles by car or an hour on the train

If you're driving both are on the motorway network so easy to get to

Simple answer "don't" London is a S****hole, you may have noticed from your previous trip. Much Much Much nicer places to visit in the UK

Now that's not particularly helpful, plenty of people don't enjoy the countryside. Some people don't like the sun, others don't like the cold. Just because you don't happen to like London it doesn't mean to say you're opinion's right or wrong, it's just your opinion.

However, feel free to make a positive contribution by suggesting some of the alternative, more attractive, options, as you see them :)

Welcome aboard DanielJay, hope you enjoy the trip.

June/July are the best times for London. You can then get up and photograph the city very early in the morning when there is nobody about. Last time i did a London shoot we were in the city at 4.30am when the sun was just coming up.

Strangely, as he wants to visit again, it would appear he didn't notice on his previous visit.

As has been said, yours isn't a particularly helpful answer. Care to regail us with tales of how bad London is and why or did you just post to air a personal grudge?

Thanks for all the replies. I was considering coming around in July time. My last visit in late November early October was rather cold and rainy. I would love to be there on better weather days.

I seem to photograph just about anything. Some of my better work has been of landscapes, a little architecture and motorsports (motorcycles/motorbikes to be specific). I am not much of a portrait photographer as photography is just my hobby to escape from my day job. :) I would love to fill up my passport taking photos all over the world so that I can have many stories to tell my family once I get married.

Since I have only been to London and not anywhere else outside of London I really have nothing to compare it with. Have any suggestions? On my first trip to London I did get sucked into a few of the tourist traps but this time I would like to expand a bit and find some hot spots for the "locals". Unfortunately my travels need to be centered around areas with public transportation or tube access as I will not have a car to get me around.

I will have to keep up on the forums to see if any groups are getting together to do some shoots around while I am in the UK. The last group of people I ran into from the forum(which is how I found out about this forum) were interesting characters and it would be fun to be with a group of photographers instead of alone.

The best thing would be, when you have decided when you are going to come over, to start a thread in the Meeting Place section. I'm pretty sure you'll get plenty of takers.

Landscape or motorsport is going to be difficult without a car unless you can arrange for someone to collect you from a train station, both cambridge and warwick castle are accessible by train easily enough from London

Have you considered Scotland as your second country to visit, the scenery is well worth the trip.

for the best rail fares it's best to book in advance as the prices are much cheaper if you book early, also it's possible to go to France on the train via the Channel Tunnel so no need to fly if you don't want to www.thetrainline.com will give you an idea of fares

Yeah motorsport is going to be difficult/not in my cards for the trip. I am totally fine with that.

I had not previously considered Scotland. I am talking with a cousin of mine that has moved to Senegal Africa who was considering meeting up with me in Paris. His job would cover the plane ticket to get him there.

Thanks for the link to the train I will check that out.

 Hang on, you didnt bump into them waiting for a boat down by the london eye did you?

London is the greatest city in the world, steeped in history and the size of a county !
it's some of the inhabitants that make it a worse place than it once was but that's getting too political.

 You mean those 3 or 4 guys and 1 lady with a stuffed animal that kept getting it's picture taken?

MONKEH!!! :D

A security guard came along to have a moan, saw 4 or 5 big guys with cameras [and a very short mean looking woman] and scuttled off quick as he could?

MONKEHH is rather popular over here. Seeing as its a tea company mascot and us brits do love our brews :D

But london is lovely in the summer... However its so much more expensive in peak times, cos everyone goes there!

Heres a link aboutMonkehhhh

ha ha I must have run into you then. I was on that boat rid you were on.

Would this guy look familiar?

That was a good trip but sadly not the greatest weather.

DJ - London in September/October might be good. The worst of the schoolkids and finger poking Tourists have gone and we often enjoy an "Indian summer" of late, great weather, much drier and warmer than June or July! [Of course, the Global Warmists will tell you that you Americans with your V8 engines are changing all of that!]

As for motorsport, Brands Hatch is only about 20 miles from town and used to be about the best photographic circuit anywhere in the world ... trouble is, you Americans with your V8 engined Indycars came over 8 years ago and they put up huge catch fencing everywhere ;)

Brands isn't easy to get to by public transport, but Kelack, who's a member here, lives near the circuit, and if you're very polite to her, will probably tell you the best buses and trains!

JONNYYYYYYYY!!! There's blast from the past, 'Jonnyreb' has not bee seen round these parts for a long time sadly. However, yes, that was us lot. There was me, and if I recall aright, Adam [Forbiddenbiker], Tristan [Blinkerz] Jon, and maybe Don [franchise juan] but not sure he was on that one or it was a different meet  We have done a LOT of them ;)

I remember you were waiting for a boat too and when the security fellow popped his head in, he saw the camera and assume you were with us and after that there was some chatting.

London is a fab place and there is plenty to see and do regardless of what time to year you visit. However, as already has been mentioned, there are lots of places in Britain that are equally good. Personally I would recommedn a trip to Oxford to see a 'different' city to London.

If you are in the capital though, give us a shout via here and we shall fix something up if you want

Haha ...Oh the memories. ..Although I can't quite remember which it was, I'm thinking it was that the daft boat ride into the night, docklands off boat, very blurry shot shoot ... what a totally pants idea that was.

Yes do give us all a shout Daniel  ... June is a good time of year, springs arrived and Londoners start to show signs of fun again … no need for us to stand around in warm waiting rooms again winding up the security.

May or September would be my choice, probably the latter.

You will always hear a few London is a dump comments, but its still one of the worlds greatest cities
Docklands is a good place for some different buildings and scenes, whatever you want to take pics of you should be able to find it within reach of London by public transport

If you want a guide for the day I would be more than happy to oblige, love showing people round my home city and there is so much off the usual tourist trail that goes unseen

Enjoy the trip and ignore the naysayers
