Hi people,

Thinking of adding a teleconverter to my 450d & 70-300 IS lens to gain that little bit extra i sometimes need for motorsport shots

Just wondering what is the best combo my kit?

None.

To expand a little, I don't think AF will work on a 450D with lenses slower than f/5.6 and adding a 1.5x converter to your 70-300 will make it f/8 at the long end (if my maths is right!). Some 3rd party converters don't tell the camera thay're there which can fool the body into ignoring them but some (most?) of these converters will not add anything in the way of quality to your shots. In the past, I've used a Teleplus converter behind a 70-300 and I'm sure I get sharper results from cropping the image rather than using the converter.

To be brutally honest, do not do it. You'll most likely lose autofocus and quality will be dire. You will be far better cropping your shots tighter instead. The 450D has plenty of pixels to play with so don't be afraid to crop. I know a teleconverter always sounds tempting but they should generally only be used with very good quality prime lenses and the teleconverters must also be of the best quality.

The canon TC's will only work with the canon L series lenses. On XXXD, XXD or XD canon models, a lens and TC will only autofocus upto lens + TC combo's of f5.6. example 300mm f2.8 + 1.4x TC will lose 1 f-stop of light making combo f4, add the 2x instead will make combo f5.6 because you lose 2 f-stops. Canon's 1D series of camera's will allow autofocus upto f8 on lens + TC combo's.

As for 3rd party TC's, some work very well, but other will cause the lens to hunt, which in turn could damage the lens workings. As stated before, TC's are really designed for the faster primes like the 300mm f2.8, although you can use the lens and TC as a manual focus combo, but the downsides of that extra reach is a significant loss of focus speed (auto) and image quality if using the 2x TC.

I have a Kenko Pro300 2x and even with a 50D and 70-200L f4 it hunted way to much to be useable, for anything other than stationary targets (and was still faster in manual)
A 1.4 was much faster (and autofocused without the tape trick to enable it). However, it will still make a 70-300 hunt at the long end, which is where you will be using it I'd presume.

I'd advise you to borrow/rent one first and see what you think.

I can't speak for the 'other' brands but the Canon Extenders will not physically fit the 70-300.
