Hello

Im about to buy a SLR and have the chance of buying either a Sony A300 for £300 or Canon ES 1000d for £300 and would like to know which of these is going to offer the best lens system and image quality?

Both come with kit lens and the eos has the IS

Amy

thumbs up for the canon 1000d

the Sony system will give you IS for every lens you own but the fact is the canon range has more choice, more availability and a bigger 2nd hand market.

ah well I'll put my vote in for the A300 :)

a bigger 2nd hand market.

tons of minolta glass on ebay - I would suspect everyone has heard that their old minolta lenses gathering dust in the attic
can fetch them good money hence the flood of lenses.
Plus as you say, IS with every lens..so even the 20 year old lenses will benefit

An A300 for £300.00???
With the lens, or body only?

If that's with the lens, it's a cracking deal..

Ooops seen it's with the lens.
I would go for that

I'd buy the one that feels most comfortable in your hands.

Both can get the shot.

Everyone wheelsthat one out but there's more canon users and more 2nd hand gear around and with more people buying into the Sony line prices for old miolta gear has been on the rise for a couple of years now.

what?! where? I found the A300 for £300 body only! (jessops) I was considering, depending on the canon outcome, trading up to an A300...I'm not sure because the only extra is live view and I think hmm I could use the cash and get a beercan which would be more useful
Anyway back OT, £300 for an A300 with the lens is a cracker of a deal

no you're right, don't get me wrong I'm no Sony fanboi and I also considered/considering the 450D/1000D, but it really depends on what you need out of a dSLR - and I can't really see what extra I personally at this stage would need extra from a dSLR over the Sony A200 - there are plenty of lenses and accessories to satisfy my amatuer needs, and if I had £500+ to spend I would be looking at a 40D probably.

On another note, OP try your local Sainsburys for a 400D if you aren't too worried about live view

A Canon 450D after cashback can be had for near enough the same price as the 1000D, and is a step up in terms of features, so neither for me!! :D

Ho both deals are part of a camera club near where i live. They are both brand new and boxed with the lenses. Im confused as to which one to get. Been doing some research and the Sony seems to deliver better coloured pics but the canon seems to have alot m ore lenses. The only downside is if the canon lenses are all alot of money as thats something i dont have much of lol

As somebody else mentioned Amy, the Sony will accept all of the old Minolta AF (Auto Focus) lenses, some of which can be picked up very cheaply off of e-bay or via the sales forums on other websites.
The two biggest 3rd party lens manufacturers (Tamron & Sigma) both make loads of lenses that will fit the Sony range of cameras.
I picked up a Tamron 70-300mm zoom lens brand new for about £90.00 and an almost new Tamron 55-200 lens for £50.00.
I have got the A200 but if I could have got the A300 for £300.00 I would have jumped at it....the only difference between the two is liveview, which in certain situations could be the difference between getting a shot and not.

Amy,

If you're quite new to serious photography (camera club) then I'd go along with whatever the majority of the other members do. It'll give you a wider circle to share knowledge and experience with...lenses will come later, but for now you'll benefit most if you're not too isolated.

Bob

I agree - try them out and see how they feel in your hands. It doesn't matter if you are comparing a Canon 1DS Mk3 to a Nikon D70, if it feels uncomfortable, then it isn't going to work for you (ok that's a bit extreme, but you get my point).

Also, as you are just starting out, it isn't difficult to try one system and then sell up to move over to another. Many people do that just because they get bored! You probably wouldn't lose much money as your gear would appeal to lots of people.

Good luck.

yep, especially if you play on the ignorance of others. I bought a Minolta Maxxum 7000 with a 50mm f/1.7 lens for £60 from ebay - the guy obviously thought I was after the camera and was oblivious to the worth of the lens - one 50mm f/1.7 lens finished on ebay this evening for £80...
Not a big increase but nevertheless if you catch some bargains and resell, you could easily build up a good amount to trade up
