Best starter flash for indoor sports/night clubs

Me and a friend have been asked to take some photos at a boxing event in the near future. While out kit is up to scratch neither of us have a flash or have really dabbled in the use of them!

You can see my kit from my signature so I will be looking at a SB-600 to compliment my camera and my friend has the Canon equivalent to my outfit so will be looking at a 430ex.

Are these flash units going to be adequate?

We have no idea about how well lit the venue will be but it cant hurt to be prepared!

Is the SB-600 a good pairing with a D300?
 
I would look into the boxing a little more.. its not usual to use flash at any half decent boxing event... I guess some might but ...
 
It was more a case of using them to reduce shadows etc.

Or we barking up the wrong tree so to speak?
 
I wouldn't want to be in your shoes if you distracted or dazzled a boxer during a fight.
 
Depends on the venue.. most boxing wont allow flash.. so you wouldnt have a choice.. What I am suggesting is that you find out... If you go setup to use flash but arn't allowed then your stuck. Always best to check first.. save yourself some grief :)
 
Yea I wouldn't think flash will be allowed, but then I really don't think you will need to use it anyway :)
