only sub £300 tbh £350 at a push i think the most important thing is easy instructions on screen as the manuals tend to be too hard to read

The D3100 is probably one of the few DSLR's that you can get new along with a kit lens for your budget

I think it's a great camera. I've had mine for 2 years and still haven't mastered all if its features

That and the Canon 1100D.

I'd suggest going into a high street shop and actually holding both, they are different shapes and some people prefer one to the other.

have a look for a used canon 450d or 500d mate cant go wrong at some of the prices that they are now

You can probably download the manuals for all cameras regardless of make.

I'd get whatever camera your budget will allow that has good manual controls.. i.e, a command dial for both aperture, and shutter speed. The easier manual mode is to use, the more likely it will be that you will use it, and using a camera manually will teach you more than using it's automatic modes.

A Nikon D80 or D90 springs to mind, as they both have a separate command dial for aperture and shutter speed. They're cheap to get hold of second hand, especially the D80, and are a great introduction for a beginner.
