Best setting for night shots ?

Can anyone tell me the best setting to use for night time shots on the Panasonic G2 ? At the moment we have tried night portriot with flash on and off and also the auto setting, but we seem to get mostly blurred shots ?

Please help as we're in Istanbul and we should be getting better results than we're getting...

It'll probably help if you say what sort of shots you're taking, portrait, landscape etc.
 
Best setting for night shots is the "on a tripod" setting.;)
 
Even in scene mode without a tripod you need
a flat surface (wall, table etc) +
the Self timer

Your shots should be blur free. ;)

It its hand held at night - hold your breath and hope for the best! Trying using a high ISO number (800+) im not sure what the noise is like on the G2.
 
Just a quickie - some of the P&S cameras I've used in the past can put out a night shot with minimal blur without having the shutter open any longer than a fraction of a second. How do they do it? Just incredibly high ISO?
