With the light improving now at games during the day, I was thinking I would be better off using a 1.4 TC on my 300mm f2.8 when shooting football from behind the goal line. I would also be using a 70-200mm f2.8 on the second body. The 1D MkIV on the 70-200 & the MkIII on the 300mm.
Just wondering what you guys think.
 
Use the MKIV with the lens with which shots will potentially earn you morem, with football its probably the close in goalmouth stuff so use it on your 70-200mm
 
Thanks Gary, was planning to use the MkIV & 70-200mm combo. I know most of you guys who shoot at higher level normally use a 400mm lens, hence my question about using a TC on the 300mm when the light is good or should I just stick to the 300mm at f2.8 to get the nice blurred background.
 
Use the 1.4x if the light allows. Can't say that I notice any great difference in background blur since the lens is typically going to be at full aperture or close to it...
 
Covered a local derby match yesterday and I tried the 300mm with the 1.4 TC with some mixed results. Got quite a few more OOF focus shots that normal, not sure if it was the yellow shirts that was causing the problem, my technique or limitations of the camera. But due to the combo I was able to get a goal celebration at the other end of the pitch which I would not have managed without the TC.
 
i need my stuff calibrating for the tc so dont use it unless at a narrow aperture.. f5.6 maybe.. otherwise no..useless.. too iffy.. dont like em..
 
When I had a 300/2.8 I didn't use a TC with it. I found it worked better just to crop in.

Thanks Tony, I might try a controlled test to see if my combo is in need of calibration.

Rob, what camera were you using?

I used it with both a 1D4 and a 1Dx.
 
Yes get a 1D4 on the quiet ;)
