A friend of mine brought her d80 into jessops to get sent away to get fixed (out of warranty). The camera was sporadically refusing to take shots and there was a strange noise when the lens was focusing. She just got a letter back saying it would cost £350 to fix and all it says in the fault description is 'TFT monitor' which seems wrong to me. Any help would be appreciated.

My company has dealt with Jessops for years and not once have we had a realistic turnaround on any repair. Whether it's Jessops' or the 3rd-party repairer's fault (where applicable), I don't know but we once waited three months for a service and pop-up flah repair on a 30D. That's not good for me.

I have used Fixation on several occasions and have been nothing but impresed by the service I've received.

Over the phone for the initial quote they've been able to give specific prices for every job, and the submission process is very easy; fill in the printable repair form, add payment details (unless you want them to phone through to ask for payment), send the camera away and it's job done. I had a shutter replacement in seven days, a hotshoe replacement in the same, plus a few other things in under a week. I don't know how their prices fair against others but I trust the service they provide and that's key for me.*

*(plus my work foot the bill ;))

Another vote for Fixation here, amazing service, very quick turnaround and Saturday delivery (at extra cost) if needed.

+1 for Fixation. I've got one in there at the moment.

you may send it to fixation , but it would still be a very expensive repair, may make it uneconomical to repair, better option would be to to dispose it off and use the money towards a new camera

I need to get mine to Fixation at some point. Not a massive issue so I'm in no rush, but when I put my D300s into Single shot mode, it sporadically thinks it's in Timer and there's a delay when taking a shot. I work in London so doesn't take me long to nip there at lunch.

Crisis or opportunity/ :)

Time for a new one I'd counsel. MPB sell used D80 cameras for around the £300 mark.

Fixation are great, but as above I would think that a repair on a d80 from there may be uneconomical. If you're getting quoted £350 to repair a d80 now I struggle to imagine they'll be cheaper with postage costs as well

I'm sure your friend could get a used D80 for less than £350, there's plenty for sale on here.
