Yes
I am a studio photographer, but am starting to do events and need a printer I can take to venues to print on the night. It needs to be able to print in various sizes from largest A4 to small keyring sizes.

Does anyone know of any printers which would be best for this use and have a feature to print custom sizes straight from the memory card without having to use additional software? Or any other ideas for achieving multiple photos on the same sheet etc.

Any advice would be most helpful

Only an inkjet printer will cover what your wanting. These are far too slow and although touch dry when done the prints are susceptable to marking and indentations until completely dry. For events pro's use dye sublimation printers. When these come out of the printer you can stand a pint of beer on a print and not even worry if you spill it!

They are a lot more expensive to buy but far quicker and more practical than an inkjet. Try Googling for DNP or Mitsubishi dye sub printers or visit Photomarts website here :http://www.photomart.co.uk/ to view their complete range.

If you want a printer that is entirely stand alone then you could consider the HiTi P510S or the fortcoming re released Super SnapLab ( which was a Sony machine but from November will be DNP branded). The HiTi prints sizes of 6x4, 7x5 and 6x9 using seperate print media packs, the Super SnapLab does 6x4, 5x7 and 6x8. On the 6x8 option you can do two 6x4's.

Both machines have card readers and touch screen operations built in.

You can get the HiTi from Photomart or System Insight and the Super SnapLab from Photomart or Alpha Photo Supplies, when it becomes available.

I've just bought the DNP DS40 and could not be happier with the quality and performance - although this particular model is restricted to a max print size of 9x6.

Talk to one of the dye sub suppliers - they are very helpful and full of advice on event photography

Generally speaking the 6x9 print size is the preferrred print size for event photographers. Only sports events guys and high end social do's demand a larger 10x8 or 12x8 print . The machines for that will be the DNP DS80 , the Mitsubishi CP3800, the Fuji ASK 4000 or teh Kodak 9810.

As some of you may (or may not know) I moderate on another forum. Today a member has offered his two Olmec OP1000 printers for sale for only £350 each. I think these would make a usful purchase for anyone wanting to get into events including the OP on here.
Link to the sale is here: http://forum.photographers.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6510

Please note I have no connection with the seller just trying to help out and thought it may be of interest concidering the op's intention.

Graham is spot on, the printers are a very good price.

Gawd! Did I say 'Spot On'? I meant Dead On!!

Funny , we have a thread running running in the Business section

Hmmm, appears to be £450 rather than £350 when I looked just now?

There are specialist forums out there. There are 2 for Event Photography.

TP is probably the best all round, open , non snobby, or elitist forum .

On the thread, or just generally?

It is worth looking up on a search 'Event Photography' and 'Dye Sub printer', etc , as there have been many discussions about the subject.

Because I get a steady flow of 7x5 sales it might be cheaper to get rid of photopbox ect and do it myself.. but a bit lost when it comes to a sub dye ..

I print nearly all my orders off my dye sub. Quality is as good as any lab print and off the DNP40 I can print gloss or matt (more of a semi matt). Good offer on the DS40 at the moment with 4 (thought it was 6 but could be wrong) free rolls of media each roll worth 180 9x6 prints. Cost per 9x6 about 27p inc vat. Not long before it pays for its self especially if print long runs. Cant quote on other makes as I dont use them but if looking at S/H market seek advice first as some the media is nolonger available.

7x5" is an unusal size for event photography , the majority , like Graham do 6x9".

Is that a general comment or aimed towards anyone.. A I mentioned 7x5 it may be me.. But I dont do event photography printing onsite.. But as mentioned in my post I do get a decent amount of orders and ahve been using photobox to print... obviously not onsite? :)

I sell a lot of 7x5's especially for ice skating events but usually from websales. Use to ftp to DSCL but now started to print my own.

I had a Sony Snaplab - it was only able to print 6x4 and 5x7 - had used both sizes at events. The great advantage is that unskilled operators could use it without any computer - the Supersnaplab will be back on the market later this year....

It was a general comment. In my experience, the most common print size for event photographers printing on site is 6x9".

Correct mainly because its the largest size from that printer also same format so easy to frame in camera. There are still some prefer 8x6 as its a more recognised size and some printers maximum size is only 8x6. Nothing to stop you printing 7x5 if that is your preference but TBH not much difference in media price.

There are occasions where 7x5 media will be propertionally more expensive, and that is down to the laws of supply and demand. The more you sell of something the lower the cost. With dye sub printers the biggest demand across all markets ( and remember these machines are used in commercial photo booths and kiosks) is 6x4 and 6x9/8" media.
