Just a quick one guys, need some plasterboard, concrete, all the usual DIY materials, I usually use Wickes, but just wondering if anyone else can recommend someone new? Slightly cheaper at all?

Chances are that you local suppliers will be cheaper than ordering online and paying for delivery. 10 minutes with Yellow Pages and a shopping list!

TBH I've always found Wickes to be the most competitive,
although recently, B&Q have started to seriously compete with them.
(I have both about 200 yard apart ;) )

Have you tried Travis Perkins? We're about to do our patio and they've beaten Wickes by at least £100, B&Q by even more. When we did our bathroom out a few years ago it was the same case too.

I know their prices aren't shown online but you could save a good bit of cash by giving them a try.

Did you know that Travis Perkins owns wickes! !! Just make sure you get a quote no. from travis so you don't get unstuck when it comes to purchase time! Helps if you have a account as well?

A few things for you;
At this point in time sheds & builders merchants online offerings are not quite as good as the rest of the retail world. This translates as if you want something cheaper you are best to do it in person, either face to face, email or by phone.

Any national builders merchant (TP, Jewson, Buildbase - who I work for) are all capable of selling you materials cheaper than Wickes / B&Q etc... However you may need to negotiate with them, make them aware of what they need to beat as the Wickes price, give them the total list of materials required.

Having an account in itself will not simply get you something cheaper. It is your potential for business / turnover & their ability to make a profit from you that will make them sell things cheaper.

Yes, TP do own Wickes, but it has nothing to do with the day to day businesses, they are very different.

If you wanted materials cheaper & are likely to be a repeat customer, develop a relationship with a builders merchant. Hope this helps.

Cheers Guys,

Registered with Jewson and TP - TP have an issue with their account creation so I had to phone the store who weren't too helpful. I will be making several purchases as I'm converting our barn into a new studio to get work closer to home, I'll be doing all the work and the plan via CAD so I know what materials are required, just don't want to break the bank too much while paying the house hold bills and the newborn etc!

Have you tried Travis Perkins?

Yes, they're f***ing useless. They never have anything in stock and the even when you coax the oaf on the phone to check to see if they can get it from another branch, they still can;t get it.

Use locals.

Steve.

Buildingsuppliesrus simply buy the materials from a national builders merchant & sell it on to you. There not ever going to be the best out there because if this.... Too many factors out of their control. They will put your business to their cheapest supplier in the area.

Don't feel that you have to put all of your eggs in one basket - deal with TP & Jewson if you like. Work it, and make it work for you. Try to find an individual in a branch that you can deal with or get along with & get them to work on proving for you.

Heavy stuff is difficult to get on line in small quantities, stay local but for everything else I recommend tradefixdirect.com . Pretty much everything else you might need and a real person on the phone.

Please just remember that "Screw fix"
