So is the Canon f2.8 100mm L out then? It's an excellent lens. The only other one I have experience of is the 50mm f2.5 which doesn't offer true 1:1 reproduction but does have a lovely short focussing distance - again, an excellent lens & not ridiculously priced at around £230 ish new

Sigma 150mm is also a great macro lens and can be had at around £300 to £350 2nd hand.

As for a ring flash i am selling a rayflash macro adapter in the classifieds which works great :)

Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX Macro @ around £250 second hand

Les

If your on a budget the Canon 100mm is a very good lens, good IQ internal focusing , good working distance and you can get them for about£300 second hand, so if you want to upgrade in the future you won't lose too much . As for a flash a hot shoe flash will do just fine for 1:1

It's has been said many times that the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM is the best bang for buck lens in the entire Canon range.

Canon EF 180mm f3.5L Macro USM £1249.99
Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM £689.00
Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM £419.00
Canon EF 50mm f2.5 Macro £225.00

All depends on budjet my first was a sigma 50mm f2,8 the older one that on digital only worked on 2,8. IMO was a great lens while dipping my feet in the water. Trying to find one is not easy but eBay throughs them up now and then for about £30

I then went for the 105mm sigma mention and again found it good. Second hand ones turn up quite often. Between 200-250

If you can stretch to L canon then I used my friends 100mm and it was fantastic. Personaly to much for me as I only dable once in a blue moon:)

My minty canon 100mm macro is coming up for sale for £300 + p&p in the next day or 2 to save you hunting :)

Canon 100mm 2.8 is an absolutely brilliant lens. Had to sell mine, but want it back.

Yes mate that sounds awesome but i dont have classified ads yet so how would i get to view it ?
Also how old is it and is it L or non L ?

You do not need L if you're just getting into Macro. you may find that Macro is not your thing or you're struggling and there you are with a 100L lens that you paid lots of money for.

I'd go for a 2nd hand 100 non L version or a Sigma 105.

I have a Sigma 105 which I'm planning on putting up for sale at some point. Can't actually say when though. :(

As an example of the capabilities of a Sigma 105 Macro, see my Macro gallery.

when i was testing the waters with macro i got a 100mm 2.8L and love it so so much. used it for macro, portraits and weddings. the IS on it works a treat too.

my vote is defo for the 100mm 2.8L

yes its not a cheap lens but worth every penny.

A set of Polaroid extension tubes on Amazon at about £60 coupled with your kit lens or a 50mm f1.8 can give excellent macro pictures at a good price:

They were taken with the Kenko extension tubes but the polaroid ones also get a good write up at less than half the price.
