this is what I bought my camera for, also at the time told the best lens for the job was a 17-40, now thinking maybe something faster maybe a prime ( my 50 mm 1.4 ) nearly always get reflections so is a flter a good idea or flash.
any comments to help would be great

^^^ I agree ^^^

A nice fast prime would be good. Personally i'd go for a little longer than 50mm so I wouldn't have to get so close for smaller fish and risk water on the filter.

Just to note, the circ polariser will slow the lens down so a fast lens will be even more necessary :)

I suspect that an 85/1.2L or a 135L on a 5D would be just the ticket.....and it'll stop the T/C's rattling in the boot.

You might try taking the flash off the camera if that's possible. Put it to one side maybe at an angle of 30 degrees or so.

A Polariser may help as well

Why not use you 70-200 rather than the 17-40. This may give you a better result.

You could also try bouncing the flash of a white reflector to give a softer more diffuse light.

dont forget Rick that with the 5D you can crop into the picture quite a bit with little or no noticable loss of IQ.. as long as you dont go mad of course.. But the 17-40 will be a little wide on it.. still cropable though.. if you wanna go mad you wouldnt go wrong with the 24-105 L and up the iso a little.. idealy the 24-70 2.8 would be what your looking at... or look towards the Sigma rang.. they're very good!!

the 24-105l is next on my list followed by either the 28-70 or 24-70, will probaly try and swop the 17-40 + cash for this, but I am getting ahead of myself now :gag:
