best lens 18-55 for canon

Im looking for a new lens to take over from the standard 18-55mm canon kit lens i have a budget of around £200 - £300 whats the best out there for my money.

Is the non-VC so much better than the VC, or is it just a cost thing?

I have just purchased a tamron 28-300 vc and the picture quality at 300mm was preety poor so im selling it. i have a sigma os 70-300 which is a lot sharper at the 300mm length.
i shall use the money of the sale of this to fund possibly a tamron 17-50 non vc
