Can anyone recommend the best insurance company for camera equipment?

Hi Jay,

There have been many threads on this.... Try using the forum search and they should come up :)

I'm with Photoguard and I'm currently waiting for them to contact me over a claim. I've had a confirmation email that they have received my claim and it's been passed to an assessor but obviously with the easter break will be holding anything further up.

They are reasonably priced for the amount of cover and from what I've read so far they are prompt at paying out claims. I got around £10K cover with transport, unattended vehicle cover and NO excess for around £300 for a years cover, which you can pay by DD over the year.

I have had a quote of £105 from them for 4k seems good. Please let me know how you get on with your claim :')

Before you opt for a specialist insurer check out puting your kit on your household insurance.

That seems pretty reasonable for 4K of kit. I doubt your home insurance company would cover you for that much. My home insurance covers me for £2500 total and any single item up to £1000. As I've got a camera that cost nearly 3 times that when it was first bought and a lens nearly twice that amount I found it neccessary to go with a specialist. I've subscribed to the thread to remind me to update with my experience of the claim.

I'm with photoguard from may last year in November I dunked my 5d mk 2 in the water. Had a quote of almost £1200 to repair it, photoguard offered me a new replacement instead of the repair with me just paying my excess.
Had no problems with the claim at all.

My house insurance covers me for £50,000 of contents, with £5,000 as personal possessions away from the home, and a single item limit of £2,000, plus my Rolex for £4,500, for the princely sum of £105:50 per year.

I have checked with them that my camera gear is covered while in the car, and provided it is out of view it is fully covered.

I've got my d5100 kit insured with protectyourbubble. Costing me just over £4 / month and worth it if you ask me in case I drop my camera or something. Although I highly doubt I'll use my insurance it's always good to know that I am insured in case anything happens (even accidentally).

This seems an expensive option by the time I add 3/4 lenses ( and filters, etc.), I think other package deals seem better value.

Wow Heather, that's some insurance cover you've got, mines £50K contents but only about half of the other limits and I'm paying around £130 for the cover. Might be time to start looking for some better cover me thinks.

Barclays additions cover all my stuff along with everything else.

Shop arround, I was with Barclays Gresham, premium shot up this year. Shoped around got double the cover for half the price, shall check with my misses when she evenually gets up to see who it is with.

I pay £40 extra a year on the home insurance which covers all of my camera gear (you have to list what items you want covered). This insures me against theft or damage and even accidental loss! It covers me anywhere in the EU and abroad (as long as I tell them where I'm going).

It's a really good deal, if anyone's interested I can give more details.

Sid.

Hey modchild,

How did you get on with photoguard in the end. Hope everything worked out :-)

Something to check if you are going to use you household insurance is the single item limit and what they class as a single item. When querying this with my insurance company they classed the lens as a camera accessory and therefore the camera and any lenses on the claim would be classed as a single item.

This might not be the same with all insurance companies but worth checking.
